View Full Version : Preventing/Reducing DOMS
Bt443407 Mon, March 23rd, 2009, 05:03 PM Are there any known things out there to prevent DOMS from occurring, or any ways to make it less sore? Golf season is starting up, and I don't want the soreness to affect my play. Besides the obvious, rest up, drink plenty of water and eat right, what else could I do?
Thanks,
Brian
Mauidude Mon, March 23rd, 2009, 05:11 PM I take L-glutamine and L-arginine immediately after working out and haven't had one case of the DOMS since; and I used to get them every time. It works for some, but not for others. Without getting too technical, the L-arginine dilates the micro blood vessels allowing more blood flow to your muscles, hence better recovery. L-glutamine is another amino acid that aids in recovery for a number of reasons.
You can google both of them to find out more, but I know they do work for many people.
Good luck!
euan Mon, March 23rd, 2009, 05:31 PM You could try contrast showers (alternate between hot and cold) and using ice on muscles. I find that I don't get DOMS in my lower body when I'm doing a lot of walking or cycling. When I play golf it's like recovery for me - a chance to get the blood flowing and loosen up.

cwbolton Mon, March 23rd, 2009, 07:11 PM Stretching after a workout
Post Workout nutrition is VITAL whether it be in the form of a bar or a shake you need something within like 10 mins of finishing your workout the longer you leave it the more it hurts tomorrow, i take Branched chained ammino acids creatine and a weight gainer shake or a pwo protein bar
eating straight away is king, plus the obvious ones but ive found these help me lots keep active after because if you have any acid in your muscles that will give you a nice case of DOMS too so always stretch or try to warm up AND down
Hope i helped

I take 2 scoops of ON 100% whey with 3 Tbsp of dextrose right after my workout. Still get the DOMS...
HevyMetal Tue, March 24th, 2009, 07:49 PM You could:-
take 1000 mg. of Vit. C with your preworkout or post workout shake (if it is mixed with water). Otherwise the Vitamin A in milk will kill it off.
Sprinkle Turmeric on your foods. This condiment has anti-inflammatory properties.
Take 2 or 3 capsules of Fish oils daily.
Drink Orange juice.
Use "Active Recovery".....which involves mobilizing the affected muscles to increase blood flow...but not adding any resistance. If you do add resistance, add only to where you can get about 20 reps without ANY sort of fatigue setting in. (I'm talking about mobilization during days off...not in an actual workout if you decide to work through your DOMS that day).
Drink lots of water.
why_not_fandy Tue, March 24th, 2009, 11:28 PM The only randomized, controlled trials on the subject showing conclusive, statistically significant results are NSAIDs such as advil and Ibuprofen. Caffeine has shown significant results when the DOMS induced was mild. Some people swear by cryotherapy, massage, cool down, and a whole mess of drugs/nutritional supplements. I don't doubt them, but in randomly selected generalizable samples, results from these treatments were not statistically significant. This fact indicates that perhaps there are more than just one pathway for DOMS, and therefore some treatments work better for some people. This hypothesis is strengthened by the fact that there are different kinds of DOMS responders, i.e. some people encounter severe pain, and some feel no pain at all after DOMS inducing exercise. I suggest trying the methods mentioned and decide what works for you, although, by the time you find a working treatment you may not encounter much DOMS from the same intensity of exercise.

Seems no matter what I do I've always gotten DOMS. It usually comes on strong two days or so later after my workouts. I switch up my routine every 4 weeks too. So I get a whole different feeling of DOMS after changing up my routine

I have a three serving nitrean+creatine shake post workout and I still get the DOMS.

vertigo88 Fri, March 27th, 2009, 12:33 PM I thought about this thread yesterday. Long story short my gf is seeing a chiro for a pinched nerve in her back. The chiro also does a whack of other natural medicine stuff including homeopathy. Gf comes home yesterday after getting for the first time a bottle called "pain relieve #20". Arnica is the primary ingredient. She commented that her back was feeling a lot better an hour after she took it. We both are skeptical by nature. It claims to assist with arthritis, muscle pain etc. So as she's telling me about the rest of her appointment I commented that i had doms in my tris from 2 days before. It's really my only muscle group that i feel for a few days after. We thought we'd experiment so we dosed me.
Voodoo or what not...I had zero doms in my tris after I was done making dinner, so about 45-60 min.  interesting anyway.
Perhaps if doms is not under control with shakes and food post workout and is actually causing enough pain to be a problem, this type of treatment might be worth a try.
Foley Fri, March 27th, 2009, 12:40 PM Try some BCAAs. (Xtend...)
Or, what worked well for me a while back was to mix some EAA's, creatine and dextrose together sipped during and post workout. That cured all DOMS.
I like DOMS.

Your comment reminded me, I do remember skimming through an article from some obscure journal testing the efficacy of BCAAs in reducing DOMS, and the results were significant. I can't remember much else, but the methodology did seem good (RCT).
chicanerous Fri, March 27th, 2009, 06:10 PM Lift more frequently, use less variety in your routine, don't eat at a caloric deficit, stay hydrated, and get lots of rest each night.

Well, I'm cutting currently, so I am eating at a deficit..
I get plenty of rest and water throughout the day. And Dave, I'm working on that Xtend, once I get some more money in my account :p
I've been trying to just deal with the DOMS, and separate my workouts into MWFS so I dont go days back to back. I guess I can just pop some ibuprofin and deal with the soreness while I play golf. I find that stretching afterwards has been helping a bit, though..
