I have just run into the same type of problem for the third time in just as many years. I was able to beat it the first year it happened. My father suggested taking time off, so I took an entire month off of running. It didn't help, so I went to see a PT. Most of the stuff I had already been doing (strength training, stretching, icing), but they had an ultrasound device. That, combined with the PT helped a lot, and I was ready to go in about a month. BTW, my injury was classified as IT band syndrome (an inflamation of the IT band). Most PTs will tell you this is caused by running on uneven roads, but I believe it has more to do with on/off training and no time for warmup. Your injury is on the opposite side of the knee (on the inside), so it is not the same, but I'll bet it IS an inflamation of connective tissue. I suggest you make an appointment with an orthopedist who will most likely give you two options 1) a cortisone shot or 2) a prescription to see a PT. Choose the PT. Best of luck.

Short answer: stop running.
Longer answer: Use an exercise bike for two months or so to take the impact off the knee.
Also: not sure what you're doing in terms of weight training, but I have to recommend deadlifts! It's one of those weird, magical things: you strengthen your hamstrings and POOF - you can do amazing amounts of good for your knees. When I started working out I thought I was just one of those unlucky guys with knee problems. Six months later I feel like I could withstand a hit from a nail gun. (Not that I'd try it!)
