According to this site (http://www.mycustompak.com/healthNotes/Food_Guide/Brown_Rice.htm) (and fitday has similar stats), brown rice's nutritional info is:

Rice, brown (long-grain, cooked), 1 cup (195g)
Calories: 216
Protein: 5g
Carbohydrate: 44.7g
Total Fat: 1.75g
Fiber: 3.5g

OK, seems pretty normal to me. I eat about a cup a day. But as I read John's excel file, I see these stats on Brown rice:

1/2 cup (dry) brown rice:
Calories: 300
...
Carbs: 60g [!!!]
That is triple the carbs and calories as listed on Fitday and other sites. Who's right? If John is, I don't know what I'll do, because apparently I'm eating way too much of it, but I have learned to love brown rice.

The caloric information for any generic item (e.g. "brown rice" or "strawberries") needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Ahem. Also, "brown rice" is like saying "brown dog", it doesn't tell you much.

Long or short grain? Basmati? Jasmine? Calrose? etc. All of those varities have different nutritional content.

If you buy your rice in commercially produced bags (e.g. Mahatma), use the nutritional information provided on the bag. Done.

If you buy your rice in bulk (out of a tub), there should have been a nutritional label above the tub. Use that.

If it's out of a tub with no label, try a different store that has such things. It's not too much to ask for a store to label their food. Then again that might just be a California thing...

Also, you're comparing 1 cup cooked rice to 1/2 cup RAW rice.

I don't know about your rice, but 1cup raw is about 3 cups cooked when I make it...
