View Full Version : SMR (Foam Rollers) Timing & Frequency

I was developing some hip pain from running. After some googling, I discovered SMR on foam rollers and after reading this (http://www.t-nation.com/free_online_article/sports_body_training_performance_repair/feel_better_for_10_bucks) article, I was completely sold and looking forward to benefits beyond "only" reducing my hip pain (which is now virtually eliminated).

The only thing I can't quite figure out is frequency and timing. Is this something that should be done daily, even after a run or strength session? I feel as if I can do it after running/cardio, but not the same day as strength (at least not on the same muscles), but I have no real basis for that presumption.

Suggestions? Right now I'm doing it once or twice per week on a somewhat random basis, frequently on rest days.

Thanks

Do it whenever you want :)

Eric Cressey advocates doing SMR as part of a dynamic warm-up before strength training in his "Maximum Strength" book, but I've also seen him talk about doing it post-workout. Personally I prefer to do it just before I go to bed as it makes me feel all loose and relaxed :)

Ha! I do the same. My only problem is that I will sometimes break a sweat from rolling. :o My conditioning is so awesome.

When I'm having problems with something, I'll often roll in the morning then again possibly before lifting. Once I got rid of all of my obvious hot spots, I've reduced the frequency a bit and can still maintain reasonably well.

OK, so it sounds like I really can't go wrong. I like it when that happens.
