View Full Version : Bedtime snack??
cgram23 Fri, May 14th, 2004, 01:10 PM I've been strugling with this one. I'm trying to find something to eat before I go to bed....and I CAN'T STAND cottage cheese. Everything else I can think of has too many carbs or too much sugar.
Any suggestions.

I'm right there with you buddy! :p cottage cheese is some nasty stuff.
good question!
txitalian Fri, May 14th, 2004, 01:19 PM I always have a bowl of Kashi GoLean or a bowl of Oatmeal before bed. I tried having a protein shake, but for some reason it caused me to have a hard time falling asleep. I also like to have a cup of celestial seasonings good night tea.

Danny Noonan Fri, May 14th, 2004, 02:29 PM Are you looking for protein, carbs, fats, ??? What gap in your macronutrient profile are you needing to fill with this meal?
Toolish Sat, May 15th, 2004, 12:50 AM I think most people are looking for casein protien before bed...as carbs this late seem to be a no go.
Also as he is talking about cottage cheese I would assume that is the case here...not sure what a replacement could be though
cgram23 Sat, May 15th, 2004, 07:42 PM Toolish is right. I'm looking for something to fill one last protien void. Some Go Lean would be ok....but I need milk with it and that has too much sugar.

Try eating 1/2 can or a can of tuna a couple hours before you go to bed. No carbs and plenty of protein.
d_samuylin Sun, May 16th, 2004, 02:09 PM Cottage cheese is of course the best choice. Dependin on brend, it may suck or tste good. I love it no matter what brend it is. But the alternative may be canned tuna, kirkland salmona little bit of shrimps, or chicken or any meat or fish. Just don't over eat it.

Have you tried mixing cottage cheese with like bananas, apples, or yogurt? I won't cottage cheese alone to save my life, but if I mix it with some of the things I listed above it cancels out the taste, for me.
If you havnt tried it, Id say give it a try.
Toolish Sun, May 16th, 2004, 11:20 PM Try it with pinapple...covers the taste really well...but adds a fair few carbs :(
TheLemonSong Mon, May 17th, 2004, 03:10 PM My suggestion is refried beans...1/2 cup is 14gs of protein (not too much, but enough for something on the late night...) you can make it in seconds if you have a microwave a few min. if you don't and w/ some hot sauce you can change the taste completely, or add some salsa (0 cal). Super cheap too, and many different varieties...I suggest Amy's Organic, therea re 4 or 5 different types and they're all wonderful and nutritious

Isn't there a lot of fat in refried beans?
TheLemonSong Mon, May 17th, 2004, 03:33 PM You can get fat free (in fact, fat free Taco Bell brand is pretty good!), but the Amys ones I was talkin' about have 3g's of fat (none of which is saturated fat)...I don't usually go for cheese, but people on this board mention the fat free kinda cheese quite a bit, so I'm sure you could even get away with putting a little of that on there as well...
d2mini Mon, May 17th, 2004, 03:41 PM Awesome, thanks for the clarification! :)
Olig Mon, May 17th, 2004, 03:46 PM If you want a good slow burning protein and don't mind having a shake I am currently using "Extended Release Night Protein Plus". It is a blend of casien and is perfect for before bed - 26 g of protein, no carbs or fats. I bought it from blackstarlabs.com.
ABguy Mon, May 17th, 2004, 04:02 PM A protein shake and some good fats..
I'll often do a protein shake and a handful of almonds.
FurbyMaX Mon, May 17th, 2004, 04:15 PM From what I gathered, casein protein is the way to go for snack before hitting the bed :)
taffer Mon, May 17th, 2004, 06:03 PM you can have a scoop of whey concentrate, that stuff absorbs over 6 hours still
Specialbear Mon, May 17th, 2004, 07:39 PM you can have a scoop of whey concentrate, that stuff absorbs over 6 hours still
really?? I thought whey digested within 20-30 min (or is concentrate different?)
taffer Mon, May 17th, 2004, 08:29 PM there is a few different types of whey! isolate, blend and concentrate
maybe blend is the slowing absorbing one, i always get confused, but alot of the protein powders dont get absorbed as quickly as you may think

Olig-- I dunno if I want this for night time...but 26gs and no carbs or fats, where do I sign up?!?! Thats awesome.
TheLemonSong Tue, May 18th, 2004, 01:43 AM I've been thinking about this post all day because its so relavant to everyone on this forum...we all get hungry before bed, and its hard to fall asleep if you're hungry. Tonight I ate some corn mixed with spinach...it filled me up, it was cheap on calories, decent for my body and I thought I made a good choice.
sheldonlanghorne Tue, May 18th, 2004, 10:02 AM some sliced fresh tomato helps cottage cheese a lot.
Hebrew National 97% fat free beef franks are pretty good, depending on how strict your diet is.
