I have had knee problems while lifting/running for the last three years. I'm 6'4" and about 225 lbs so I wouldn't think that my weight is hurting me that much.

I have performed deadlifts, back squats, front squats and leg presses. No matter what, I end up getting knee problems. They ache all day when I am on them. I am currently doing Waterbury's Total Body Training. That has me doing one leg exercise 3 times a week. For the last 3 weeks I have been performing the leg press with a low weight (only 4 plates). As I have increased the weight to 5 and 6 plates I begin to have trouble. I can lift the weight fine but my legs will pay for it for the next few days.

I have also been running on alternating days at about 6 miles per hour for up to 20 minutes.

I don't currently stretch because it doesn't seem to do much for it(i.e. I still get knee pain).

Would I benefit from doing one leg day a week? Is there a supplement I should try beyond the multivitamin, glucosamine and chondroitin that I already take? Special exercise?

Have you thought about dropping the running for something else? Running killed my knees and ankles at a much lower weight than you are carrying. Some of us just aren't cut out for distance running.

Also, you might have problems with activation of glutes and/or ankle flexibility that causes the knees to take more punishment than they should. Often times the knee pain isn't a problem with the knee itself, but the joint above or below. You might try reading up on improving both of those things to see if it helps.

That was my first thought.

The running is on a treadmill so it is lower impact than it could be. I have had similar problems when lifting (mostly front squats) with little to no running.

I will look into the glut and ankle flexibility problems though.

I did the treadmill attempts, too. My knees and ankles were much better off when I stopped.

What do you do for your posterior chain?

Do you use knee sleeves? This has helped me out a lot with some of my knee issues.

Knee trouble sucks. I had a really bad knee for a long time and ended up getting surgery.

Anyhow, my knees hate running - sprints are fine - and i only do one lower body workout a week these days. I used to follow alot of waterburys stuff but personally high freqencey dosen't agree with my shoulders, hips, back and knees!

However, i feel great now since i lowered frequency. Of course, i still use about the same amount of total volume.

I have knee problems too. It was just my right knee (I sprained it 2 years ago) Now also the left mostly I think from over compensation of trying to baby the bad one. Sometimes the cause can be foot issues or somewhere other than the knee. It sounds like you are doing a lot and that might be preventing you from any kind of recuperation.

As for supplements, I take MSM from Jarrow Formulas. It specifically targets joints and tendons to help regenerate. Personally, I would talk to a professional and maybe revamp your workout.

DO some soft tissue work and warm up with dynamic exercises. It helps a lot. A lot of knee pain stems from the hips or other restrictions.
