View Full Version : Bigger Legs Affecting Running Motion
TheThirdMohican Wed, January 28th, 2009, 08:39 PM So as my legs have gotten much bigger from squatting, I have been having "issues" with chafing and rashes down in the groin area. Especially gets bad when I run. The only way I can run to avoid it is to run with a really wide stance, but it just feels wrong. Any tips from former chicken-leggers?
Andrew Wed, January 28th, 2009, 08:52 PM If it's a real problem, wearing compression shorts always works.
chicanerous Wed, January 28th, 2009, 09:42 PM Body Glide (http://www.bodyglide.com/) is another good option (I've heard). I use compression shorts though.
Big_D Wed, January 28th, 2009, 09:55 PM Compression shorts are the best thing I've found. otherwise you end up with no hair and lots of rashes :(

Huh. I must have wide hips because I haven't had this problem.
Azure Wed, January 28th, 2009, 11:55 PM Not really had this problem either.
Weird. And I have bigger than normal legs.
Never heard of compression shorts either. I'll have to go look them up.
Phoenix Thu, January 29th, 2009, 06:53 PM I used to have that problem when I had michelin man legs but now I wear bike pants which prevents chaffing. But I do not always wear them and seldom have issues.
Out of interest what is the size of your thighs ?, it could just be you body structure and type allows for more rubbage

I guess I'll buy some at Target or somewhere and give it a try. I think these might work since when wearing mesh shorts with the inner compression mesh I have not had this problem.

Measured where?

A lot of guys on my old high school track team used to swear by baby powder. As my legs still have a way to go, I can't say I've ever had that problem.
Phoenix Thu, February 5th, 2009, 12:27 AM Measured the size of you thighs, do you have super chunky legs like 26-30 inch quads etc...
I was simply wondering if your rubbage was occurring due to you having well developed legs, like a sprinter.

Around 22 inches, give or take a couple of inches.
The rubbing is up near the groin area, where I measure 25-26 inches.
Phoenix Thu, February 5th, 2009, 07:35 PM Ok well it could be your running motion or hip structure as mentioned previously.
When I was very overweight my thighs were quite large and fat so they rubbed a hell of a lot. I had to wear bike pants to exercise or I would get bad chaffing and even long walks when I would sweat would be a problem.
Now that I am lean they are good no problems, but still wearing bike pants irregardless is a very comfortable option.

I think my running motion is not designed for my frame any more. When I ran cross country I was a good 30 lbs lighter than I am now (but probably at a slightly higher BF%), and I think the running form my muscles "remember" is based on cross country

I can relate to that. When I ran cross country in High School I was 95 pounds lighter than I am now.
Strangely enough, I can run a quarter mile faster now than I could then.

Yeah, it's funny, after 3-4 months of XC training my best 5K time then was about 1-2 minutes less than I can run now without any running-specific training.
PAF Mon, February 9th, 2009, 01:16 AM Vaseline! Solves everything.
Also, miniature little plasters for your nips to stop them chaffing against your shirt. :tu:
