View Full Version : Carbonated drinks
mmace Tue, January 27th, 2009, 05:31 PM I've always wondered why we're told to stay away from them, what is bad about carbonated drinks?
Even soda water is carbonated with nothing else added (co2 I believe), is this bad for you too?
I'm not meaning the sugar or aspartemine (sp?) in "soda's", I'm meaning the generalisation of "stay away from carbonated drinks" which includes soda water which has no sugar etc
does that make sense?
cheers for any replies

I think it's just the sugar. I drink immense amounts of Pepsi One and Coke Zero.

If diet soda is bad for you...I am totally screwed...
J_W Tue, January 27th, 2009, 11:55 PM I always have regular seltzer (sometimes with some lemon added) when going out. It has nothing to do with carbonation and everything to do with sugar and HFCS.
mmace Wed, January 28th, 2009, 02:48 AM cheers guys, good to know
HardTrainer Wed, January 28th, 2009, 04:00 AM If diet soda is bad for you...I am totally screwed...
haha, me 2. I have cut down alot but I still like a few drinks of pepsi max a day :D
needachange Wed, January 28th, 2009, 09:51 AM I've discovered Diet Wild Cherry Pepsi and wow  is it the only "diet" soda that I've tasted that doesn't taste like diet. It tastes just like regular Wild Cherry Pepsi  I'm so glad I found this stuff because it kills my sugar and sweets cravings.

I'm a diet Mountain Dew fiend....I have two or three a day.
Sometimes will throw in a diet Pepsi with a lime wedge.

Ever since they switched the formula on Diet Dew a couple of years back (Tuned up taste! on the bottles), I can't drink it :(
Coke's Diet Mello Yello was so much better and tasted so much closer to the real thing. They killed it :(
Now I'm on Vault Zero, but they recently quit selling it in Nashville. I have to buy some when I'm in Knoxville to bring it home with me.
Everything I like gets killed :(

 that's funny cuz wild cherry diet pepsi is one of the few diet drinks that actually tastes diet to me.
i think when you get used to only drinking diet drinks it just tastes too sweet. i remember feeling exactly like you about it when i first made "the switch". i felt that way about diet root beer too.
Everything I like gets killed :(
karma.

I wouldn't recommend that method.

i love coke zero and hate it when all i can find is diet coke. never had pepsi one...will have to try it. if i drink two coke zeros in a row i get a rush. :jumping:
MannishBoy Wed, January 28th, 2009, 02:28 PM For diet "cola" beverages, I've kind of switched from Coke Zero to Pepsi Max. And I don't generally like Pepsi because regular Pepsi is overly sweet vs Coke.
Plus, Pepsi Max has the same caffeine as Vault Zero...75 mg./8oz Vs about 35 mg or so for Diet Coke and 55 mg or so for Diet Mt Dew.
:spaz:
needachange Wed, January 28th, 2009, 02:54 PM  that's funny cuz wild cherry diet pepsi is one of the few diet drinks that actually tastes diet to me.
Hmmmm that's pretty weird  I've tried every "diet" soda by the major brands and this seems to be the only one I can tolerate. Plus like I said it kills my sweet cravings which is a good thing. Maybe that's why I like it? The fact that it's sweeter than the others.
Sea2Sea Wed, January 28th, 2009, 04:37 PM Sprite Zero is my poison and the only Soda i drink. Then agian i only drink that when its mixed with a shot of Segrams VO. Other than that its Water only. Its a vicious cycle of de-hydrating and re-hydrating. BUt it works for me.
Jaer Thu, January 29th, 2009, 10:59 AM Sprite, Coke, and Cheery Coke of the zero variety are my choice. I try not to have too many, not because I worry about calories, but because the mental effect of having something sweet. Sometimes, having that sweet taste in my mouth strikes up a craving for more sweet things (the gateway sweetness leading to the dessert tray!)
I think this is why people say even diet sodas are bad. If you crave something sweet and have a diet soda, you still gave in to the craving. That's fine if you ALWAYS have a diet soda to fill that sweet-tooth, but even then you aren't training/discipling yourself to over-come the sweet-tooth. You are still satisfying it. So when it hits and a diet soda isn't available, you might give in to something else.
Similarly, some friends and I get together every week or so for some games. We've beening doing so for years, now, and back in the college days, we were downing gallons of mountain dew. Remember those 24-can cubes? Yeah, 6 of us would go through 1 - 2 of those a night.
Years later, we still have massive quantities of soda, but usually of the Coke Zero variety. Drinking lots of soda is just habit at these games. It ends up being more of a problem when there is no diet soda (for whatever reason) and regular sodas start coming out - we're all so used to drinking soda, it's hard to.
I've gotten much better about keeping to water on those no diet soda nights. But it's not easy.
Vince Thu, January 29th, 2009, 02:31 PM Well a lot of soda consumption is also bad because of the phosphoric acid in it; it makes it harder for you to absorb calcium. I don't think it's in carbonated water though. Make sure you have enough calcium in your diet to compensate and you'll be okay.
zenpharaohs Thu, January 29th, 2009, 02:59 PM wow you play for both teams?? don't see that too often.
I like 'em both. Definitely different, but both good. I buy whichever one is on sale.
I don't really like most other diet sodas.
Oddly enough I was so happy about Pepsi One when it came out I was frustrated when I couldn't get it around where I live. Until recently, Coke Zero was a lot easier to get. This was ironic because I live within five miles of the Pepsi corporate headquarters. What is even more ironic is that across the street from the Pepsi corporate headquarters is a famous landmark summer soft ice cream/fast food shack, where they have patio umbrellas over their tables advertising for just about everything except Pepsi. For the longest time they sold Coke. One of the things I will look for when they open (typically in early April) will be to check the cola situation there.
KT Monahan Thu, January 29th, 2009, 03:34 PM I drink caffeine free Diet Coke, which, when you think of it, makes me wonder why I even bother.
JONESY_87 Thu, January 29th, 2009, 05:19 PM You guys get all the good drinks...We only get coke, diet coke, coke zero, no wild cherry or even regular cherry, did have vanilla...My favie is sprite zero.
tsk2264 Thu, January 29th, 2009, 06:15 PM Wow, a lot of diet soda connoisseurs here. :D
I drink caffeine-free diet Coke, but only because I'm so used to it and it's available at Costco. It's the last processed food I haven't completely eliminated from my diet yet and it's proving to be tougher than I thought. But seeing as to how you guys are enjoying it regularly, maybe I'll just keep drinking it and not worry about it!
witeowl Thu, January 29th, 2009, 08:06 PM Bah to the colas. Diet Sunkist all the way, baby.
gray Thu, January 29th, 2009, 09:50 PM I like the Calistoga flavored seltzer waters. Lemon and lime for me, orange is tad weird.
JacobGraydon Tue, February 3rd, 2009, 06:03 PM Coke's Diet Mello Yello was so much better and tasted so much closer to the real thing. They killed it :(
I work at a hospital so naturally I see a lot of people. Anyways, a patients family member came in with a Mellow Yellow and it blew my mind, I thought they stopped making them.
She said they still make them in Mississippi.

Mello Yello is still common in the south. However, Diet Mello Yello (no "w's"), isn't. :( It's been discontinued as far as I can find out.
Yesterday I found out that Mountain Dew was created in the 40s in Knoxville, TN. I grew up there and never knew that. I do have an old Mt Dew bottle somewhere at Mom's house with a hillbilly guy at a moonshine still, though.
Being an old addict of Mt Dew and Mello Yello from way back, I always liked the Mello Yello taste slightly better.
ms3jake Thu, February 5th, 2009, 09:43 AM I have 1 or 2 cans of cherry coke zero a day. I have read that diet sodas even though they have 0 calories can still sabotge fat loss efforts(something to do with insulin), But until this is proven I am not quiting my coke zero fix.
Speedster Thu, February 5th, 2009, 09:54 AM Someone earlier mentioned phosphoric acid depleting calcium ... and I believe the science is still out on that. The most recent study I read, and the most recent study out there I believe, says that the calcium loss from phosphoric acid consumption is negligible. HOWEVER, the attribute some of the bone loss to the fact that people are switching out things like milk for soda so they're losing out on that calcium source.
One thing that IS an issue with diet soda, and I'm living proof of it, is that the phosphoric acid eats away the enamel of your teeth.
That means your teeth get more sensitive due to lack of protection and they also start to look yellow because that nice, white enamel is gone.
I'm a soda addict and I'm trying to break the habit. I had a "new" New Year's resolution to not drink soda in February but four days in ... I failed!
I found giving up soda to be my hardest thing so far. I kicked BOOZE easier than I kicked diet soda, if that tells you anything rofl.

That would certainly explain a lot. I quit smoking over a year ago, but I was NOT able to kick the diet cola habit!
Since this thread started, I felt better about my diet cola habit since other people like Zen consume "immense" amounts of it. I have been drinking a lot more of it than normal the past few days.
monz Thu, February 5th, 2009, 05:27 PM Club Soda is where its at.
p.s.: im kidding about the whimps comment.

You guys actually like Vanilla Coke? :suspicious:
;)
It's got a very chemical vanilla taste to me. If I want vanilla coke, I just put some sugar free vanilla syrup in mine.
nebulous Tue, February 10th, 2009, 05:16 AM I drink Coke.
Regular.
1-1.5 liters a day.
Who needs enamel anyway?
But this thread has inspired me to try fulfilling one of those "I really should do that" things that everyone has. Gonna get some (cheap) bottled water today and live off that during the day. Tap water just has a funny taste. Should cut soda consumption right back.
Last time, my body went from this huge amount of sugar (I used to drink easily 3L a day, plus candy) to none during working hours, and it coped just fine. Amazing, that.
Falhurk Tue, February 10th, 2009, 05:54 AM I really wish Cherry Coke Zero would start being imported into Canada. Every time I head down to Bellingham or Seattle I buy three or four cases.
They never last very long

I can't even have this stuff in the house. It sits in the frig and calls to me. It is so good. If I drank all I wanted I would never sleep from all the caffeine.
Speedster Thu, February 12th, 2009, 10:40 PM Who needs enamel anyway?
People who like to keep their teeth? ;)
Nate Buesching Sun, February 22nd, 2009, 07:59 PM I remember before I graduated from Purdue a couple years ago they did a study on Diet Drinks and weight gain. ABC News had the article about it recently:
http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/OnCall/Story?id=4271246&page=1
Basically to summarize it it's not the soda or carbonation per se that's problem. It's the artificial sweeteners. I remember hearing that since they are empty calories aka (They taste sweet so your mind thinks it's getting calories), that when the body realizes there are no calories it drives you to want more sweets or to overeat. I can say from experience that when I pop a diet can or make some crystal light with artificial sweetners I tend to want more food. I also find it makes me really dehydrated. Honestly it doesn't make them bad or good just a choice. If you can handle the additional food cravings after drinking them then by all means. I think I'll attempt to kick them completely.
zero Tue, February 24th, 2009, 06:16 PM Now thats interesting.. and certainly makes sense..
Up till the last couple of weeks I've been going though allot of pepsi max and now replacing as much as possible with water, to be honest it makes me feel I'll after so much :/ For some reason dr.pepper will give me that feeling just from a can of the stuff.. (an acid reflux sort of feeling)
Its addictive stuff though caffeine, the worlds most popular drug. At worst I've found myself driving to 24 hour asda(supermarket) at 2am just to get some..
Can't do tap water, the chlorine is way to obvious.. at the moment I'm spending 13p (20cents?) on 2litre bottles of water and a bottle of coke costs £1.59 (about $2) so not so bad, and i get to keep teeth.
theMasters Tue, February 24th, 2009, 06:33 PM This is good to know.
I thought all soda, diet or otherwise was a big no no in the world of healthy living.

Makes me think of the people who go to McDonalds and order a Big Mac and fries, with a diet coke (because the diet coke is the "healthier option"). :blank:

Different strokes for different folkes. I think diet dr pepper is one of the worst tasting diet sodas I've ever had. I love regular dr pepper. Regular dr pepper is my choice over any kind of soda when drinking non diet.
Aleister bates Sat, February 28th, 2009, 12:22 PM i stay away from sodas even the zero cal ones due to the sodium.i stick to my mineral water.:nono:

due to the sodium?? diet pepsi has 35 mg of sodium. that's 1% of the rda.
SaintofGamblers Fri, March 6th, 2009, 01:43 PM I saw on the biggest loser someone say that drinking diet soda's increase your risk for metabolic syndrome. Anyone else know sometihng about that? I only ask because i had Metabolic Syndrome before i started working out and changing my nutrition.
I normally dont drink diet soda but sometimes do before a workout.
zero Wed, March 11th, 2009, 12:46 PM Just thought I'd dig this up again...
I've been off pepsi max (sometimes 1litre+ a day) for over a month now (Switched totally to bottled water) My appetite has dropped right off. In a little under a month I've lost a bit over half a stone and 2 inches off my gut.
Been trying to loose weight on and off for a while, the only significant difference I've made is ditching the caffeine. Its been no problem for me to ditch food I know I shouldn't be eating at times they shouldn't be eaten.
So make of that what you will, somebody here may find it helpful to give it a go, for me it was worth the surprisingly nasty withdrawal symptoms.
