Hi,

I'm wondering about ways to use the pool and sauna in our appartment building to advantage in a fat loss / LM preservation regimen.

One obvious use for the pool to do cardio stands out.

But over and above that, is there any scientific litterature out there supporting use of a sauna, or alternating warm/cool baths to promote relaxation, recuperation from muscle fatigue, etc etc.

Any links, articles, personal experiences from trainers is well appreciated!

:D

I believe the rule of thumb is that you want to warm up your body/muscles before workout (hot tub, sauna, etc) and cool the muscles after workout (cold bath or shower). So I'd say hit the sauna before your workout and take a cool dip in the pool post workout. Better to go to the pool when you're all pumped up anyway...

I've got a sauna in my home and I find that it prevents soreness if I use it post-workout. I'd never thought of using it pre-workout.
I know there are a lot people who believe saunas stimulate weight loss, but I don't know if there's any evidence. I do know that it's very relaxing and good for your skin.

I always thought the sauna was just a place where all the really old naked people met and relaxed - pretending that they just had a grueling workout?!?!?!

i dunno...thats how it is at my gym

Any time I have been in a sauna I am completely drained when I get out. I could never do a workout after a sauna as I wouldn't have enough energy. Perhaps it helps if done for just for a short time but I have never tried it that way before.
