View Full Version : egg problem
Moz Thu, November 6th, 2008, 07:24 PM hi
im just wondering whether or not it is safe to have raw eggs. You hear that it shouldnt be done as it can cause salmonella, but then again many people do it, mixing milk and raw eggs. also does this give you a lot of protein coz im guessing theres a lot of cholestrol in eggs.
what are the benefits of doing this, does it give a lot of protein.
thanks
George Thu, November 6th, 2008, 07:28 PM There's a very slight risk of salmonella.
There is no real benefit to eating them raw. The protein in eggs actually becomes more bio-available when you cook it.
Eggs have a decent amount of protein but they also have a decent amount of fat. If that does not fit into your diet then I would suggest eating the whites by themselves since the yolk is where the fat comes from.
Moz Thu, November 6th, 2008, 07:32 PM oh right thanks very much
i think il just stick to boiled eggs and remove the yolk. better to be safe than sorry.
modmaven Thu, November 6th, 2008, 09:11 PM If you're aiming for protein to get into a shake, protein powder would be a better source than eggs. Egg whites are nice for breakfast, but if you're going to bother hardboiling eggs, just eat that lovely center core. Eggs are just about perfect food.

I eat egg whites almost every morning, but I think it would be detrimental to my health to include the yolks due to the very high level of cholestoral. I think egg whites have their place in a healthy diet. I don't think raw eggs do though :nono:

Unless you're one of the people who react sensitively to dietary cholesterol (most people aren't), you don't have to worry about cholesterol in eggs. Check out this (http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=92).

Those studies seem to be based on consuming 1 egg daily and/or 6 eggs weekly. I would likely be eating 3-5 whole eggs per day. I have heard studies about men who ate a lot of eggs versus few eggs, but of course I cannot remember it, nor do I know where it was from:doh: Just that the guys who ate a lot of eggs were more consitantly not alive:D I'm still convinced that eating upwards of two dozen eggs a week might be bad for me.

Here's (http://www.medscimonit.com/abstracted.php?level=5&icid=470141) a recent study where they consumed 6 or more eggs a week.
EDIT: Maybe you were talking about this article (http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/87/4/799)?

:bang:
I eat 7+ whole eggs a day+ cheese and red meat like it's going out of style, and my blood work has never been better. Most people don't have to fear the egg. Lots of good nutrients in the yolk.

I'm just checking in on this thread but haven't read the articles people are pointing to.
In general, there is no link between dietary cholesterol and the cholesterol in blood. Except for calories, there's no reason to shun the yolk.
smuhhh Sat, November 8th, 2008, 01:11 AM well then, I guess tommorow's breakfast is going to taste a lot better. Glad this thread happened.
