About the author:

"Kris was an all state defensive lineman for Glencoe High School in Hillsboro, Oregon and excelled as a 4-year varsity golf team member. Kris graduated from Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and has been involved in Internet development since 1999."

Also, I like how he just references a "researcher Dr. Misner" without providing any other information about who he is or what he does.

Not saying that you need a formal education to know your stuff but I wouldn't trust this guy's recommendations based on the limited information at hand.

I guess I am destined not to grow or gain strength then, because I eat every damn night before going to bed.

The researcher is:

Dr. Bill Misner Ph.D.

In his book Natural Hormonal Enhancement, Rob Faigin states "studies show that fasting prior to sleep can heighten sleep-related growth hormone output. Allowing ample time after consuming carbohydrate before retiring to bed will help maximize nighttime growth hormone release." [1,2]

If I don't eat within 30 mins of going to bed, I feel sick to my stomach with hunger.

3 Hours without food? lol.

I would say given my results that it can safely be ignored for people who work out late and deplete their glycogen a good deal. I normally eat about 1700 Calories in a single meal a few hours before bed, and about 900 of those Calories are carbs. And I've been pretty anabolic for the past few years.

So yeah, if you have the low-duration style workout maybe you need to think about your blood sugar staying high. But I think if you knock your glycogen right down on a regular basis, your blood sugar doesn't really stay spiked that much after you eat carbs.

Perhaps so. But you take a guy who fasts before sleep every night, and I'll take a guy who goes on a serious Smolov and who eats before bed every night and let's see who got more anabolic than who.

Breathing squats for the win...

The guy who fasts before sleeping would quickly find himself with his head underwater if he tried smolov

I also think somatotypes come into play. If you're an ectomorph (hardgainer), you can probably get away with eating carbs at night and not see any issues with fat gain. However if you're an endomorph, late night carb snacking will probably wreak havoc on body fat levels.

So says the man who has done a Smolov.

And I think that is the point. If you look at the idea of nutrient timing for hormone release, you should do it in the context of your individual training, nutrition, and sleep. It's very clear that people get anabolic if they eat for a bulk and do a hard resistance program like a Smolov. So that sort of eating before sleep doesn't stop you from getting anabolic in every case.

Make it easy... The growth hormone you might release while sleeping if you don't eat prior to bed is so minimal as to make ZERO difference to your training.
