Has it been usefull? marcus Tue, May 11th, 2004, 10:55 AM I went to a chiro when I was having minor back problems. From my experience it seemed like a quick fix and a bit of a rip off. The guy told me I was all out of alignment and that he would manipulate my body to get it back in line. After, my back would feel better and he would tell me that you cant judge by feeling and it still needed work. By the end of the week it would be hurting again. He said a couple more appointments and it should be fine. After a few more appointments he was still saying I needed more appointments. It was bloody expensive and I started thinking that the guy was ripping me off. If I had let him, he would have had me going to him forever. In the end I just worked on my core stability and it solved the problem and I havent had any problems since. Mind you, this is just my experience. Maybe the Chiro I was seeing was a bit dodgy. Someone else might have had a better experience. Marcus  Ken In Canada Tue, May 11th, 2004, 11:21 AM Just wondering if i can get some opinions and stories about chiropractic treatment. Have people had bad experiences? Has it been usefull? Perfect timing, FS. :) My experience was positive, however I might be biased due the the fact that my childhood best friend happens to be a chiropractor. I saw a local chiro here (as suggested by my friend), and he was able to help me in one visit. That's something that 2 months of physio was not able to pull off. I would say that it depends on your condition - I had several locked joints all near the L-4 and L-5 area. With a short series of painless manipulations he was able to free up the joints. I'm feeling almost 100% as of this morning after 7 months of daily agony. What is your condition? What type of pain and where are you feeling it? Have you been assessed yet or seen your family doctor? Ken Zan Tue, May 11th, 2004, 11:51 AM I’ve had periods of back pain over the past couple of years that have found me seeking help from a chiropractor. My problems tend to be poor alignment, which has caused some muscle tweaking. An example of this is that I would try to touch my chin to my chest and get strong pain on the upper left side of my back. I went through two chiropractors before I found my current guy, who is excellent. The first did a good job, but wasn’t very thorough. The second was a woman who just wasn’t able to exert enough force necessary to realign my spine. The guy I go to now is very good, and both times I’ve been to see him with problems (once for my back, once for my neck) he has been able to diagnose and correct it to where I leave feeling 100% better. Unlike Marcus, I wasn’t fed some lines about needing reoccurring visits. So, I would say I’ve had very positive experiences with them. In my opinion if you’re having back/neck pain it’s worth giving it a shot and scheduling an appointment with one. born sleepy Tue, May 11th, 2004, 04:34 PM I saw one four times last year when I was having major back and leg pain. he cracked my back, did ultrasound, deep tissue massage (ow! quit it!) and gave me some core exercises to do. this was last year before I started doing any regular exercise. it worked to an extent; this pain is 90% gone now but it's still there. eh. I can live with that and it's slowly going away. so I'd count that as a positive chiro experience. if they try to do a hard sell and endless recurring appointments, find someone else. some chiros are hucksters, most aren't. chiro was the only therapy that had much effect; I tried steroid injections right into my spine (not as painful as it sounds), acupuncture, physical therapy, then chiro was the last thing I tried. of course it could have been that the prior therapies all contributed as well but I didn't get much relief til after the month of chiro. AMR Tue, May 11th, 2004, 05:01 PM I've gone to one Chiro for a few years and I will never go to him again. At first he helped me out a lot with a kinked up neck but when i went to him with some running related issues his recommendation was to stop running. WHAT! STOP RUNNING! ARE SOME KIND OF QUACK! I almost punched him right in the face. I then went to a real doctor, got some physical therapy and learned how to increase my strength and flexibility so I could run pain free. So I think chiropracters are good for some things but not all. Also, Chiropractic treatment is reactionary NOT preventative. Just my two cents I'll never go to another chiropracter. fujo Tue, May 11th, 2004, 06:16 PM AMR you should go to my chiro LOL he is a runner. I have always had good experience with mine. Just last week I was in such pain below my left ribs and it radiated to the top of my shoulder. I went to the dr. (I hate going to the dr!) and they did x-rays, ekg, ultrasound, blood work -- all perfect. They said they didn't know what it was -- gave me a steroid, an antibiotic and nexium -- but I was still in tons of pain. I went to my Chiropractor he said hey you have a rib out -- popped it in and I was fine. AMR Tue, May 11th, 2004, 06:24 PM AMR you should go to my chiro LOL he is a runner. Sounds like my kind of chiropracter. If I get all kinked up again I'll consider a different chiropracter but I'm done with my old one. aerome Thu, May 13th, 2004, 05:10 AM I had a bad time with a chiro. He caused more pain in my lower back. I finally got smart and went to an othpedic doctor. A MRI showed I had A heniated disk and I had to be operated on. That did the trick. I'm pain free now for 10 years. jesse1 Tue, June 8th, 2004, 02:59 PM I had mixed results with a Chiro a few years back. He solved the problem but wanted me to continue coming to see him. I did, and the problem came back and never went away again. I should have quit while I was ahead. Jimbo Tue, June 8th, 2004, 03:50 PM A chiro claimed that my back pain was caused by all the electromagnetic fields I'm exposed to due to my work with computers. He would have me hold out my arm straight to the side, put this thing that looked like an iron on my chest (supposedly this contraption would emit electromagnetic fields), and then he would push down on my arm with both of his arms (he's a big guy). Of course my arm went down. He then took the contraption away and have me put my arm straight out again. He would push down, and couldn't move my arm - proving his theory. Of course he wasn't using any force the second time. I haven't been to a chiro since. I'm not saying they're all bad - but I kinda wonder if that field attracts people like this. Fudgam Tue, June 8th, 2004, 04:21 PM The chiro has gotten me from cripple to walking in a few days. Great for when I pinched nerves(or did I srew up a muscle?...) in my back. As in any practice, whether conventional or alternative, theres gonna be docs that know what they are doing and those that are there to take your money. sheldonlanghorne Tue, June 8th, 2004, 04:45 PM I've had both kinds: the ones who pressure you to keep coming back (one guy tried to scare me into coming back); and the really great kind who solved my problems and made me feel better than ever. Just like medical doctors, there are jerks and there are angels -- getting a good recommendation is the first step. marcus Tue, June 8th, 2004, 05:02 PM He would have me hold out my arm straight to the side, put this thing that looked like an iron on my chest (supposedly this contraption would emit electromagnetic fields), and then he would push down on my arm with both of his arms (he's a big guy). I had a chiro do the exact same thing to me and I walked out and never went back. He thought that that simple test proved his theories without a doubt. It wasnt quite scientific enough for me. It really suprises me because I have a friend studying to be a Chiro and the course is really full on, they learn a lot more than physios and almost as much as doctors. The guy is fantastic. Obviously knows his stuff and is very thorough and makes sure I understand what he's talking about and doing. He's also been a competitive bodybuilder for a long time (he is probably about 6'3", 250 lbs, 5% bf), so he very much understands the stresses that exercise puts on the body. :tucool: Bean Thu, June 17th, 2004, 06:54 AM isnt 4% bf = dead? lol.. anyways, i used to go to a chiro. he was very good IMO, i went to him every week, and i cost 10$ per visit. I just went to him because it was considered healthy. i would feel really good and relaxed after each visit, and i would always have a red face :o . so IMO, you need to find a good one and stick to him/her.. i moved and where i live now, we dont have a chiro within 100 km.. iengbersen Mon, June 8th, 2009, 05:56 PM I am having lower back and I am wondering if it could be from driving. Anyone else have this problem? |
