In moderation, it probably isn't harmful. The problem is that most products that contain HFCS, and, the fact that it is in virtually everything (even bread!), makes it very unlikely that you will only consume a "moderate" amount. If you don't pay attention to labels, you will probably end up eating quite alot of HFCS, which of course, is bad. Fructose goes to the liver to be processed (unlike other carbs). Your liver says " I already have enough here, thank you".... and immediately shunts off the extra fructose as fat. From what I've read it's best to take your fructose-bearing foods early in the day (when your body will need them more). It seems it's a lot harder to deplete your liver fructose stores than it is a glycogen or a regular carb. No need to go into detail, you pretty much covered it. That's why I'm not big on fruits for carbs. Once the liver is full with fructose, it is then spilled out to the fat cells more readily. |
