TOTAL FAT: Lists the grams of fat in a serving of the food. Higher fat foods should be balanced with lower fat foods.

SATURATED FAT: This is part of the total fat in food. Don't add total fat and saturated fat together.

i guess the same would apply to TRANSFAT as SATURATED, but i wasn't sure about the first two until i looked it up on the web today.

Absolutely correct.

The same thing is true of Carbohydrates: Sugars and Fiber are 'parts' of the whole Carb #. What is left (i.e. doesn't add up) is actual complex carbohydrates.
