I recently bought Fibre tablets since i can't manage to get my RDA without piling on the carbs. They supply around 40g fibre per four tablets and they recommend you take them half an hour before a meal daily. I bought them to promote a healthy digestive process. However I'm slightly concerned about two things:

a) The tablets are suppossed to Curb appetite - does anyone know how they manage to do this?

b) Will the increase in "performance" of my digestive tract promote the loss of any extra supplementation I may be taking? (I'm using whey protein and creatine).

I'm currently in my cutting phase and working to a 1600 calorie 20% fat, 40% Protein, 40% Carbohydrate.

Thankyou kindly.

I think you are better off taking metamucil or konsyl, you get 5g dietary fiber per 7g serving. Your digestive tract needs to be clean so you can absorb all the goodies you are taking.

I try to take it twice a day, 10g of pure psyllium fiber is great - just keep your toilet paper with you, ha ha ha.

Is there a difference between psyllium brands? On the label they are exactly the same.. though citrucell has some sort of orange flavor.. Anyway, metamucil is $10.99 and Trader Joes brand is $3.99. We dont seem to have Konsyl at any of my stores.

Is there any reason to use one over the other?

This is the way I understand it:

If your fiber is in pill form or a powder, chances are it is soluble fiber. That is, it will absorb water and mix with your, ahem, waste and make it softer. That's about all.

Insoluble fiber (whole wheat, vegetable matter, flax seeds) absorb water and then go on to scrub your intestines, large and small, clean. Or at least cleaner. You also get more 'intense' constipation relief as a result.

I see soluble fiber as a constipation reliever and insoluble fiber as the 'pipe cleaner' so to speak.

Caveat - I am wrong often so lets get some more info here...

a) The tablet foam up inside the stomach, tricking the body in to thinking the stomach is full. Hence your appetite has gone.

b) Two schools of thought. One, food (if you can still call it that) is moving through your colon much quicker than normal, so the body has less chance to extract nutrients through the colon wall. Two, the colon wall is usually clogged up with all kinds of rubbish making it hard for the body to extract nutrients. A high fibre diet should get rid of all the rubbish making it easier to extract nutrients. So in the end I don't think it ill make a whole lot of difference.

I would advise to keep away from appetite represents, if you are hungry eat. If you want to lose weight, concentrate on keeping your metabolism high, not starving yourself.
