View Full Version : Healthy Saturated Fat Source Suggestions, Please!

I discovered recently that dairy has been an almost exclusive source of saturated fat for me, which isn't good because I seem to be mildly lactose intolerant, and I don't want to become very lactose intolerant from over consumption (I've heard this can happen, can't cite any sources).

Avocados and coconuts would be my first choice, but they are quite price prohibitive. Beef also is rather expensive, and my understanding is that red meat sat fats are inferior to healthier sat fat sources.

So can anyone tell me some healthy, inexpensive, and whole food saturated fat sources?

Whole eggs? (Even though less than half the fat in whole eggs is saturated; most of the fat is unsaturated).

EDIT: Dark chicken meat including the skin is also a good source of saturated fat.

Why do you think beef is an inferior source? It's actually good, especially the grass fed type vs the corn fed. It comes with a lot of monounsaturateds as well (think olive oil). It actually has more monounsaturated fat than saturated, and a lot of the saturated fat in beef is stearic acid, which is the body converts to monounsaturated oleic acids and which does not typically raise cholesterol.

IMO, beef is excellent. You could eat dark meat chicken or turkey, which actually contains more nutrients than white meat (I see Christy edited as I was posting to add this too :)). Eggs as Christy mentions are also good.

As for dairy sources vs lactose intolerance, have you tried heavy cream? It should have next to no lactose so if you are only mildly intolerant, that might work.

Instead of whole coconut, have you looked at the oil? You can use it to fry with.

Thanks for the tips!

I just recall reading somewhere that red meat sat fats were not-so-good. MannishBoy's explanation was enough to get that myth out of my head.

I already eat lots of eggs . I'll try some heavy cream, and I'll start eating the skin on my chicken  I'm not too skilled with a skillet, and tend to shy away from actual cooking. That's a good idea, though, I'll check into what I can do with coconut oil.

That's typical mainstream press stuff. :)

One of my main sources protein and fat these days is grass fed natural ground beef and bison, either 85% or 90% lean.

It's not cheap, though. It's about $1-$1.5 more per lb, but I'm worth it :eat:
