View Full Version : Morning cardio and hydration?
Todd411 Sun, May 9th, 2004, 08:33 PM First time posting but been a reader for a few weeks now. What I haven't found or possibly overlooked was hydration when doing cardio first thing in the morning.
If I'm putting in anywhere between 45 - 60 minutes of cardio in the mornings do I need to hydrate during my cardio? I usually take a small drink of water first thing before going out the door but don't take any water with me. And, in that vein, should I down a cup of coffee to up my metabolism before I hit the road as well?
And I have to say that I'm glad to have found such great forums! Thanks to John and the supportive members who post here! :tu:

Bluestreak Sun, May 9th, 2004, 08:58 PM I usually take anything thermogenic after cardio with my first meal of the day. It tends to upset my stomach if I do otherwise.
I'd like to know about hydration during cardio as well. I tend to use less water with more intense cardio exercise, but I do like to have it handy...

eltejano Sun, May 9th, 2004, 09:11 PM I used to hate ingesting anything when I first woke up, especially before doing one of my pre-work am jogs. But someone pointed out to me that I wasn't hydrating myself while I was sleeping and after a 6-8 hour rest, I should drink a cup of water upon waking. I thought it was dumb, but I did try drinking about 8oz of water for a while, and felt a difference in my jogs. Just keep a glass by your bed and try it for a week. It's only water, you're not going to hurt yourself. Worst case is you have to pee more. . . ;)

Exactly, it's only water. I'd suggest drinking some water before the morning cardio because your body needs to be hydrated for your organs to work more efficiently, particularly the liver which helps to erradicate poisonous toxins. Water contains no usable energy source, so your fat burning ability will not be effected by it. If anything, drinking the cold water first thing will help to kickstart your metabolism by burning stored energy as your organs work to raise the water temp to normal body temp.
Bluestreak Mon, May 10th, 2004, 09:59 AM I always have a glass of cold water first thing after I wake up with my creatine. I take my vitamins then as well. Then it's off to the gym.
I also keep two bottles of water in my mini-fridge at work, as I drain one, I refill the other and put it back so I'm constantly drinking cold water. I learned about the cold water trick, where your body spends calories to warm the water... it's like, free calorie burning just by drinking cold water.
SwoleCat Mon, May 10th, 2004, 10:59 AM Water before/during/after cardio is just fine.

metroba Mon, May 10th, 2004, 08:28 PM I take metabolisers and as of now dont run because of school. I plan on running in the morning after school ends, in 2 weeks. I was wondering if ,along with water and the vitamins, is it okay to take the metaboliser? I also would eat after the run.
