View Full Version : I phone 3g
Timbermiko July 15th, 2008, 11:07 AM Anyone have one?
I'm weighing all options as I have an instinct and do like the phone it has some major bugs that need to be addressed. I have about 2 weeks before my 30 day is up to return if I wish. I'm thinking iphone-I love all the apps for it!
Instinct pros: pic and video mail
Great GPS!
Voice command.
Stereo bluetooth.
Cons: Browser SUCKS!
Calendar- "that's a calendar?
Iphone pros: Great interface, apps are endless...Safari browser ROCKS! Calendar contacts good.
Cons: No voice activation, No video, No picture mail, GPS is limited( no turn by turn)
If anyone has some insight it would be greatly appreciated.
Robert2006 July 15th, 2008, 12:21 PM No modem feature on the Iphone either. If that matters for you.
Me I'm leaning towards the Asus E thingie. The new one with the 10" screen and Linux would be a much better internet device.
Add a basic phone with it and the combo will be perfect for me. Bigger then just a cellphone but not huge.
Locally the Asus with a highspeed cell modem is similar/maybe cheaper then an Iphone.
Croz July 15th, 2008, 12:46 PM I absolutely LOVE my iPhone (classic). It is the first gadget I've owned that lives up to the hype completely.
I'm not a big text'er, so the lack of picture messages doesn't bother me, but the browser, apps, and everything else are near perfect. And it's a great iPod, too.
I'm considering upgrading to the 3G, but haven't made a final decision. But if you don't have an iPhone now, I'd say it's a no-brainer, unless you're a big MMS person.
Timbermiko July 17th, 2008, 12:09 PM Well, I do text a bunch...
For instance...I'm in the restaurant business and was looking at a building for lease. The Instinct was great to send pics to my wife. I know with the iphone you would have to email them...but more of a pain.
I still have some time before the 30 is up..but I may be turning to that 3g.;)
Kilter July 18th, 2008, 02:57 PM I think the 3G is awesome also. If Sprint carried, I would definitely have got it. I've got the Instinct. I like it a lot. GPS Navigation/Live search is incredible. I've used quite few times. It is strange that the iPhone doesn't have a full navigation system. I also don't understand why they didn't include video capability for the camera. I prefer the smaller size of the Instinct but the iPhone is not too much bigger. You can't beat the iPhone interface, though. Maybe in a couple years I'll get the then current iPhone.
henderjr July 18th, 2008, 03:55 PM I've had the Sprint Touch (HTC) since late last year. Windows mobile 6.1 with threaded SMS, free GPS with turn by turn using Microsoft Live Search, and tons of apps/games/tools. I don't know if I'd ever go over to the IPhone. So easy to customize and have it look and behave how you want.

As I understand in the near future telenav will be an app available for purchase to do what we already have:cool:
I'm waiting on the "firmware" update, that is suppose to happen over air soon. I really do like the phone but man it needs some tweaking.
Archistrategos July 19th, 2008, 04:58 AM I got a 3G iPhone the day after launch. I like it. :tucool:
3G and apps sell the thing. I've been listening to Pandora (http://www.pandora.com/) all day at work over 3G, and obviously there's the iPod functionality as well.
I initially thought the YouTube support was kitschy, but I've actually used it several times to watch some cooking shows and other random videos. My friend tried to show me a game trailer but his cable connection was dodgy so I pulled the video up on the phone.
The Google Maps functionality is somewhat sketchy. GPS is fast and accurate, and you have the usual map/satellite/hybrid/traffic views, and driving directions. It works perfectly well for everything except active navigation. I would describe it as useful for a "co-pilot," but not for a driver -- although you can get step-by-step driving directions, and have the GPS track you, the navigation support is very dodgy, and the phone screen powers off* just like in any other app, which sort of ruins the whole active navigation aspect.
*sometimes powers off. Twice now it has actually stayed on while I've been driving. The rest of the time the backlight turns off, followed by the screen turning off. While I can disable the screen from powering off in the global settings, it would be nice to have a setting for the application that would leave the screen on while in active navigation.
Maybe they'll update the Maps app, maybe someone will write a better one and put it on the App Store.
I never use MMS or video recording so the lack of these features doesn't bother me. I txt with some frequency and I'm happy with the SMS support.
Web browsing is pretty good given that this is a cell phone. 3G+Safari make this a much better experience than IE/Opera on EDGE/GRPS. One complaint: you can have multiple web pages open at once, but switching back to a window inexplicably reloads the page.
3G definitely impacts battery life. Of course I'm using the thing constantly for music/internet/data fetch, but having a car charger and plugging it in while you're at work, etc., are definitely good ideas.
I've gotten used to the on-screen keyboard and I'm pretty fast with it at this point. I never thought I would be able to give up a physical QWERTY keypad. The auto-correction is a huge help.
Downsides: no cut-and-paste, no MMS, no video recording, sketchy nav support, no voice dial, no Bluetooth DUN, single application model (makes things like an IM client difficult), battery life.
Otherwise I think it's great :D My previous phone was an HTC Wizard (Windows Mobile 5) and I'm pretty happy with the switch. It will be interesting to see how Google's Android plays out over the next year or two... if a manufacturer comes out with some killer hardware that runs Android then maybe I'll switch over, but for now I'm happy. :)
