View Full Version : Turning DSLinto Wi-fi Nowhereman June 29th, 2008, 10:09 PM I have DSL service through ATT and was thinking about making the connection wi-fi throughout my house. What products are availabe to add to my current service? How is security? Croz June 30th, 2008, 12:03 PM The big question is how the DSL enters your system. If it's through a DSL modem, that has a network cable connection to the network card of your computer, then you can add a wireless router. (A network connection looks like a slightly wider phone jack.) You can get them anywhere. They all have pretty good instructions on how to set them up and configure them. But I have seen some DSL connections that enter your computer through a USB port. That's a bit harder. You need to then set up a wireless network card or USB stick in that computer and configure Internet connection sharing in Windows. If that's the case then the computer that is connected to the DSL would need to be on for you to use the wi-fi. Security is a big issue for wi-fi. Even if you're not worried about people snooping on you, anyone accessing the Internet through your wi-fi could have their activity traced back to you, not them. Rule of thumb, WEP encryption is useless, WPA is better. Change the standard password on your router to prevent someone from hijacking it. One other thing to note is that many providers have a terms of service that prohibits wi-fi. Hasn't stopped anyone I know, but if yours does, technically you're not supposed to have a wi-fi connection tied to your DSL. Also, some providers will offer Wi-Fi as a service, so you could ask them and they will come out and set up the router and configure everything for you. Nowhereman June 30th, 2008, 03:14 PM Most of what your are saying is alien to me but I will call AT&T to ask them about Wi-Fi. As a matter of fact I think someone in my class has a husband who works for that department. I'll ask them if they know (they are eating lunch right in front of me), if not I'll have to look into those other options. Thanks |
