View Full Version : How do you get your fiber?
fattytuna Wed, June 25th, 2008, 07:36 AM Do you take fiber pills or eat high fiber food every day? What are some good fiber foods/supplements? I am considering kellog's all bran buds, it has some crazy fiber content.

KT Monahan Wed, June 25th, 2008, 08:35 AM I use All Bran Bran Buds. I just add some to cheerios or yogurt. I use it to regulate myself mostly. I don't mean to sound too gross, but it can really change the volume and consistancy of your stools. But in a good way. Again, at the risk of sounding gross, when I am regularly eating Bran Buds, I find it much easier to clean myself after a movement. Helps with treating hemmoriods also.
Is that way too much information ?
MannishBoy Wed, June 25th, 2008, 09:15 AM Green vegetables mostly. On carb ups, oats, quinoa, sweet potatoes, high fiber tortillas and sprouted grain bread.
Sometimes I do use an inulin fiber supplement blended into a protein shake. But I eat so many veggies I get most of my recommended fiber from there.
jkugelman Wed, June 25th, 2008, 10:52 AM I try to get my fiber from whole grains and veggies as much as possible. I'm not a big fan of fiber-heavy cereals and bars. They usually just give me bad gas. Trial and error has taught me that natural, whole foods are much better on the ol' digestive tract.

I eat 16-20 oz veggies a day. Seems to provide all the fiber I need. When fasting, I use psyllium husk.
guava Wed, June 25th, 2008, 12:02 PM Green vegetables mostly. The best way really. Green vegetables have a lot more fibre per calorie than any other food source.
I've put some information about fibre in the sticky that I wrote in the beginner's section (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=42001). You'll notice that no grains are classified as excellent or very good sources, and only a few are listed as "good sources". That's because a lot of starch tags along with the fibre in grains, which is not the case for high fibre vegetables.
Excellent food sources of dietary fiber include: turnip greens, mustard greens, cauliflower, collard greens, broccoli, Swiss chard and raspberries. Very good sources of dietary fiber include romaine lettuce, celery, spinach, fennel, green beans, eggplant, cranberries, strawberries and flax seeds. Good sources of dietary fiber include cucumber, apricots, navy beans, grapefruit, rye, sweet potato, beets, buckwheat, shiitake mushrooms and oats.

I forgot flax seeds. I eat some flax combined with either almond or hazelnut flour in some low net carb/high fiber muffins I've been making about every week :eat:
Some nuts also have decent fiber if you pick the right ones (walnuts, macadamia nuts, etc) but aren't something you want to rely on too much due to the fiber/calorie ratio :)
