View Full Version : Whey bad for your stomach?

Hi All!

I seriously don't know what's up. A few weeks into my exercise routine I bought some whey protein powder and I usually added it to a shake three times a week or so on my weight training days.

Well, I've had excruciating stomach pain lately and I've gone to the doc twice. She told me to try some pills and I've bought and taken everything she said except for some ulcer medicine which she said to buy if the other ones don't help. Well, nothing is helping. If I eat scrambled eggs for breakfast, I later shriek in pain.

Tomorrow I'm going in for an ultrasound and I'm just wondering - can taking whey protein mess up your stomach?

This whole thing really bothers me because even though I had a week off recently I couldn't exercise as much as I wanted to because of the pain and overall indigestion. It popped up suddenly out of nowhere - I was fine for 8+ weeks and then bam! it hit me.

Hopefully I'll find out what's up tomorrow.

Paul

I don't think so, but I have no experience with whey and the stomach lining.

I do however know that various ulcer medications work very differently. I dated a girl with multiple stress-related ulcers that only responded to one medicine of the several she tried, and explained loosely the difference in each to me. So good luck with your ultrasound, I hope your pain subsides... not a fun scene.

Try a week without your protein powder and see if that improves things.

You might be a bit lactose intolerant and/or have gotten low grade whey. Better products are generally easier to digest.

Thanks for your answers guys. I still don't know whether whey is bad, but I had the ultrasound today and it looks like I have fatty liver. After eating a lot of broccoli and asparagus today things seem to have improved greatly. I read that fiber-rich foods help get rid of the fat you have so I think it's time to eat a lot more veggies and fruit.

Thanks again.

Just eating veggies won't get rid of fat (although a great idea anyway). Hard exercise combined with caloric deficits do.

Do you have high triglycerides? Might want to start watching those and experiment with what lowers them for you if high.

Looking online, looks like keeping alcohol consumption down until you get it sorted is a good idea.

Regarding exercise, I usually do cardio three times a week and weight training twice a week. Often it's half and half so 2 of each and I've lost almost 6kg so far.

I was tested for high triglycerides and they're actually fine.

As far alcohol is concerned, I avoid it like the plague.

I did a little bit of research and now I think it may be hepatitis, but I had an antibody test done not too long ago for Hep B and C and came out negative so it's weird.

My ALT levels over a year ago were like 86, where 82 was the max, but the doc at the time said they're fine.

Thanks for your answer.

I was having stomach cramps after whey for a while and determined it was the brand I was using at the time. I switched to a different brand and have been using it ever since without problem.

Low-grade whey could be it. Moreover- is it 1) whey CONCENTRATE? and 2) do you mix with milk?

COncentrate, especially cheap stuff gives many folks pretty severe gas and cramping. Add milk and

1. I just checked and yes, it is concentrate.

2. Yes I mix with milk.

The thing is that the problems I mentioned only started to be bad about two weeks ago or so and even then I didn't take too much of the stuff and even though I've stopped taking it I still have problems with digestion. In fact, I think i'm going overboard now because I'm really not eating a lot and I'm starving myself a bit because I'm afraid of eating.

Thanks for the tip, I'll probably have to do the same.

Look at what you did before, what at what you started doing, try to test eliminating products.

Seeing the doctor is good also.

I'm a lot better now. I've had three visits in the past week and I'm going to go in for some more blood tests.

As far as food intake is concerned, I've made a list of foods that give me stomach problems, and milk, unfortunately, seems to be one of them.
