View Full Version : Drinking a shake DURING a work out?

Hey people. I've been reading the forums for a while but this is my first post. Love the information on here and the calibre of posters. Thanks for all I've learned so far.

So my question has to do with nutrition during a workout. I usually drink water while I'm at the gym and then have a post workout shake once I'm done. However, I'm reading "Nutrient Timing" by Ivy and Portman and am thinking about taking in some whey and simple carbs on my way to the gym and while I work out (I may try waxy maize for the carbs - never tried it before). Does anyone do this, or similar? And if I do, do I then have a post workout shake afterwards as well (the answer to this may be in the book I guess) or should I just make one shake that will last the drive to the gym, the workout, and afterward?

Then again, i'm having pretty good results with what I'm currently doing and... if it ain't broke... ?

Thoughts?

I do carbs pre and post workout and protein/bcaa during.

I usually take: 1/2 waxy maize + whey before and after workout.
Waxy Maize is great, too bad it tastes so terrible!

Yup, that is what I do. I have a carb meal about an hour pre-workout, BCAA's during workout, and waxy maize/whey PWO.

Really? I can't even really taste it when I throw it in with my shake. I used to do the dex/malto carb thing, and that was terrible. I hated the taste of dex, and trying to get malto to mix in anything was a perpetual losing battle.

I've found I'm much less likely to bonk if I consume something during a workout. That's generally BCAAs, with some whey isolate depending on goals/workout. Then I follow with a similar drink PWO with creatine.

Well, the one I have had this terrible grape flavour (the only flavour they had available), yuck!
The maltodextrin I have tastes good actually LOL ("Glycocarb"- orange flavour).
I use that one after heavy workouts like legs or back, not always though.

I've never had a problem with energy levels during the workout....so I just drink water to keep my heart from pumping harder than it should.

When it gets tougher I mix in some powdered gatorade into my water for some carbs.

Thanks for all the replies, guys (and gals!)

So, I normally eat 3/4 cup of oats with some non fat milk and whey about 2 hours before my workout... do ya think I should sip some Waxy Maize (or chug it if it's nasty! lol) with some whey during my workout or do people think it would be better to sip some BCAAs and whey and then go for the WMS afterwards?

At present I just sip water with added electrolytes (Elixir).
