I have very stiff and very sore middle back which just started suddenly last night (thursday night) after a bath. I can't move my head down without tightness running down my back, and I have very little mobility in my back at all. It hurts so badly I only got about 3 hrs sleep last night.
I trained deadlift wednesday as well as other back exercises, I felt fine during session, so I doubt it could be a herniation (I would have felt something 'go'). It's not nerve impingement because my legs feel fine.
Neither paracetamol nor Ibuprofen have any effect.
Is it possible this is some kind of crazy DOMS? It's much worse than soreness I have felt so far, can't think of what else it might be.
If it is just a muscular problem (which I suspect it is) does that mean it will get better by itself?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Was this the first time in a while that you did deads? Was the onset of the pain sharp and sudden or gradual? It sounds like severe DOMS to me and I get that, too, sometimes from deadlifting. It's much more painful that DOMS in other parts of my body. What I find helps is a combination of four things: 1) attention to good form 2) a few minutes of LISS right after deadlifting, 3) an ice pack on my back as soon as I get back from the gym which I keep on while I have my PWO shake, followed by a shower alternating hot and cold water on my back, 4) topical cold gel on my back right after the shower.

I do deads once a week, I'm doing the Coan/Phillipi routine.
The pain sort of came on once I cooled down from a hotbath, started gettin really stiff and sore, and then gradually got worse throughout the night. I've never had DOMS as bad as this but I'm pretty sure its a muscular problem luckily, and not a tendon/joint/disc problem.
I suppose it could be a pulled muscle.
Thanks for your reply.;)

Something I learned during the rehab of my spinal erectors is that they connect in quite a few places and wrap around your pelvis. I sprained mine by taking a spill during a baseketball game. Even though I fell on my butt, my middle back hurt as well. The doc then showed me a spine model and how the falling on my butt also pulled the spinal erector muscles that are connected to my middle spine.
I get the same pain....possible its your spinal erectors...
