View Full Version : 225lb barbell Backsquat club
optheta Sun, May 18th, 2008, 02:50 PM Since there is a 500 and a 400 Squat Club i figure i add a 225 Squat Club. Granted Its not as Badass as 400 or 500 but i still think its an achievement.
My current 1RM is at 200lbs well below parellel. I Have about 4 more weeks left on this workout routine then i will try going for 225 cant wait.
Bsheller Sun, May 18th, 2008, 03:32 PM Ya can't reach 300 without 225, or 400 without 300. I'm sure there are plenty of people on the site that'll be joining the club.
PlainGreyT Sun, May 18th, 2008, 06:10 PM I shouldn't be too far off this at the moment
My best for reps is: 5x5 187lbs but I'll be testing my 1rm later this week
Themadstork Mon, May 19th, 2008, 02:06 PM I've been stuck at 205# for one rep max on parallel squat for months. Goal is 225# by age 52 (November).

Thanks man, hopefully I can hit 300 around wintertime :)
carguy Fri, May 23rd, 2008, 06:18 PM The best I've ever done is 205# but I'm only doing 185# right now. This will give me something to shoot for.

Spartan88 Wed, February 11th, 2009, 11:03 AM This was a rather short-lived challenge. Did all those who posted in this thread make it into the 225 club?
Anyone else not yet ready for the 300,400 or 500:eek: squat clubs?
Hoping to hit 225 by the end of March
Current best:
74kg(162lb)x5

Well, my dad just got a 235 parallel squat this past weekend to finish off his time in this challenge.
I should have gotten a video of it. I'll be the first to preach that one shouldn't tell me, show me.
Spartan88 Sat, March 7th, 2009, 02:34 PM Feels great to be getting closer to this goal.
First time squatting over 200lbs today:)
3x5 92kg/202lbs
PlainGreyT Mon, March 9th, 2009, 06:24 PM I have to hold my hand up and admit that my 225 was not legit
When my gym installed mirrors last year I was shocked and more than a little embarrassed to discover how shallow I was squatting
But I haven't been idle in the meantime - I've rebuilt my squat from the ground up so I'm once again chasing 225 but this time with a minimum depth of parallel
Here what I did tonight:
4x3, 1x1 132lbs
I've only just returned to the back squat so I'll attempt maxing it out in a few weeks
PlainGreyT Mon, March 16th, 2009, 09:46 PM Heres what I did today:
Squat:
5x3 62.5kg (137lbs)
I'm adding weight and volume slowly so that I keep squatting to a proper depth. I felt my form was good today and the bar sat comfortably on my back. The weight wasn't especially challenging so I tried to compensate by going deeper
I maxed my front squat a while back which was 70kg (155lbs)
With that in mind I'd like a Back Squat 1rm of 75kg-80kg (165-185) when I test it in a few weeks
Themadstork Mon, April 13th, 2009, 01:43 PM I have found myself making much better progress doing a 8-12 reps than when I was doing Westside for Skinny Bastards with the 3-5 reps. Perhaps due to having more slow-twitch fibers? I also use a form that is closer to powerlifter than olympic. I seem to be stronger in the posterior chain and could use more quad strength. It sounds like with your front squat where it is you should hit your goal on back squat.

Well there are many possible reasons for this but if you find that you like it then stick with it
I also use a form that is closer to powerlifter than olympic.
Theres no harm in that. We're both tall guys so I don't think widening the stance to compensate for a more difficult time squatting is a bad thing
I seem to be stronger in the posterior chain and could use more quad strength.
Thats one off-shoot of having a wide stance squat - you don't use you quads as much in the movement. Maybe some unilateral leg work would solve this?

I actually tested it 2 weeks ago and came up with an 80kg (176lbs) back squat. I have some irritating limiting factors on my workouts atm but I'd like to complete a 225 BSQ some time in the autumn and maybe a 225 FSQ before the year is out
tensdanny Tue, April 14th, 2009, 01:40 AM I squatted 3x5 @ 220 tonight.
I'm assuming I could do 225 for one :D
Count me in. I'm going to keep pushing towards 300 with serious intensity over the next 5-6 weeks or so.
Themadstork Tue, April 14th, 2009, 01:56 PM Hoping to increase my one rep max from its current 237# to 300# by next spring. Sounds like a long time, but I tend to make slow gains due to age and ectomorphism.
PlainGreyT, regarding the weaker quads, it's not because I squat the way I do; I squat this way BECAUSE I have weak quads. I need to start doing front squats to work on the quads.
A 225 front squat would be a good goal for me, also.
vanDutton Fri, May 1st, 2009, 11:57 AM What if I don't have access to just a standard barbell backsquat? I have the powertec WB-LS system. I did 2x8 205 last week. I'm going for 225 today, after two or three warm-up sets. Will that count for this challenge?
IanG Mon, March 15th, 2010, 04:52 PM I am resurrecting this thread to help track my squat.
The past year I have been trying to be honest with all aspects of my life and lifting was is one area where I want to be totaly accountable.
I am strong, but in such a inbalanced way I have come to realise I need to step up and start doing things right, take squatting for instance.
I can leg press nearly 900 lbs but under a bar my form is so shocking its untrue.
Simply its been a case of avoiding the technically difficult exercises over maxing out on machines and squat was the last exercise that I needed to start again on.
Tonight, lots of warm-up and then
5 x 5 @ 90 lbs
The weight felt so light I almost straight away rammed on some more weight but one of the guys at the gym who plainly does squat gave me some good pointers and I stayed on the light weight and worked on form and depth.
Once a week I will squat and see how I get on.
Mauidude Mon, March 15th, 2010, 05:35 PM That's the right approach Ian. I've learned that form is your friend. Learn good form, develop the muscle memory that goes with it, and then you'll be able to add the weight on as you go.
IanG Tue, March 16th, 2010, 03:43 AM Thanks Mauidude for the feedback.
Reading alot on this and as well as squatting once a week concentrating on form will also include another session of mobility training for the hip and ankle.
Nathan Tue, March 16th, 2010, 10:22 AM Good luck with this, I'm on my way to this weight as well. You probably know the site, but just in case, stronglifts.com has a lot of great squat guidance including stretches, mobilization exercises, and form tips/videos. The program is heavily squat-oriented so lots of knowledge there from what I can tell.
angell Wed, March 17th, 2010, 09:21 AM Hi guys:)
I'm going to be dedicated to joining this club this year. At the moment I can do about 5x143 lbs squats. Anyone that have good tips about common beginners mistakes? I have been stuck at the same weight for quite some time now, but my DL is improving rapidly (225 lbs now).
