View Full Version : Tweaked my knee -- opinions, please?

The other night, as my son scored the winning run sliding home in an extra inning baseball game, I jumped for joy! :jumping:

Upon returning to earth, I felt a strange twinge in my knee. :blank: I must have landed oddly or something.

It is not visibly swollen and does not generally ache or hurt when I walk. It feels sort of like I may have slightly hyperextended it. There is the tiniest sense of pressure inside the joint with a slight resistance when I try to fully extend the leg to a locked-knee position. Going up stairs, it feels perfectly normal. Descending stairs, I feel a very slight twinge of soreness or pain and this kind of "trick knee" sensation that it might be unstable (though it seems not to be, as I've climbed up and down many flights today without incident).

I suspect that I have probably suffered a mild strain to one or more of the ligaments but having never had any knee problems before, I was wondering if anyone could chime in with their thoughts?

I think you nailed it....." a mild strain to one or more of the ligaments.."

Bit of an impact injury.....

I wonder if your patella tracked incorrectly? That can cause what you are describing due to inflammation on the cartiledge behind the knee cap.

That's what started my whole knee issue :(

See if you can do this:

Stand sideways on a step on the bad leg. With the good leg angled back behind you to maybe 45° and the toe pointed up, try to descend on the good leg until the heel of the back (good) leg touches the next step down, then ascend. Are you able to do it? If not, you may have a patella problem that has caused your VMO muscle to shut down.

You should be able to complete this on your good side.

(That's a TKE, or terminal knee extension).

How do I angle the good leg back behind me and then point the toe up? I can't visualize what I am supposed to do.

Don't worry about pulling the leg back then, that's probably a progression from the base movement.

George pointed me to this... Look at the 2nd and third exercises:

When my injury was fresh, I couldn't do these without pain at all. As I started to recover, I started being able to do them.

Compare your good to bad leg.

Yours may not be a patella issue, it could have hyper extended or been sprained. Hopefully it's nothing more serious.

OK, thanks! I'll try them tonight since I can't get youtube past the SmartFilter(tm) here at work. :bang:

Yep, that was apparently it. After about a week and a half of rest and a leg workout high on reps and low on weight, everything seems to be OK. :tu:
