While looking at various sites instructing how to perform various exercises, I've noticed there seems to be two different variations of the standing dumbbell curl. One, found on sites such as bodybuilding.com and exrx.net suggest starting with the arms hanging down at the sides with the palms facing towards the thighs and twisting the dumbbell while bringing it up until the palm is straight up. The other, such as demonstrated here for example http://www.expertvillage.com/video/7519_beginning-weightlifting-dumbbell-biceps.htm shows it being done starting with the palms facing away from the body. Is there any reason for doing it one way over the other or is it simply just a matter of personal preference?
Thank you.

Actually, there is a ton of variations. Basically....different angles hit the
bicep in different areas. I like to change grips, width of grips etc. (close grip, wide grip, ez curl bar, straight bar, etc.)

There are variations he showed you one, it is a good one. Look around. I prefer A barbell curl, a DB hammer curl and the version shown in your video, in that order. I keep my elbows in and stationary with no swinging of body at any time.
