Well a few weeks ago I went on a snowboarding holiday and after seeing some of the photos when I got back I decided that I should try and lose some weight.

I'm 5 foot 10 and I weigh 190 pounds, I have done a lot of cardio in the past, I even did a half marathon 12 months ago (But I couldn't do one now!!) but even with all that cardio training I never went under 190 pounds. I figure concentrating on weights and doing some cardio may give me some better results. So I joined a weights gym near where I live, I've only been going this week, but I'm feeling very positive.

Doing the exercises isn't going to be a problem, but I'm going to struggle with the nutrition side, the two problems I'm going to have are figuring out whats good and whats bad but I'll do this through researching on this website, also fitting 5-6 meals into one day seems a little strange but I'm sure it will be something that I get used to.

I'm writing a blog at the moment, when I get it filled with something useful instead of me rambling I may send you guys the link.

Hello and welcome :)

In terms of nutrition, I found John Berardi's seven habits of effective nutrition useful and simple guidelines to start with.

1) Eat every few hours. You should eat between five and eight meals per day.
2) Eat complete (containing all the essential amino acids) lean protein with each meal.
3) Eat fruits and/or vegetables with each food meal.
4) Ensure that most of your carbohydrate intake comes from fruits and vegetables. Exception: workout and post-workout drinks and meals.
5) Ensure that 25 to 35% of your energy intake comes from fat, with your fat intake split equally between saturates (animal fat), monounsaturates (olive oil), and polyunsaturates (flax oil, salmon oil).
6) Drink only non-calorie containing beverages, the best choices being water and green tea.
7) Eat mostly whole foods (except workout and post-workout drinks).

I took these from a T-Nation article called Massive Eating Reloaded (http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=459429)(a bulking program), but they are perfectly suited for fat loss too. The stickies on this site are full of great information too.

Hope that helps
