I went to a local batting cage today to try out some bats I'm thinking about getting. As I finished up, I realized that I had gotten winded and quite sweaty after this. I was wondering if taking batting practice could be considered cardio?

I am thinking yes. Here's why.
1. My heart rate was up, quite a bit. (not sure on numbers)
2. I was using explosive energy every 3-5 seconds for two minutes, with a one minute rest between 'sessions'.
3. I did this ten times, working up quite a sweat and tiring myself. (trying to get a feel for the bats)

If anyone agrees, would this be LISS or HIIT or somewhere in between.

absolutely its cardio. I don't know how hard you go at a batting cage, but you are definetly burning some calories. it probably wouldnt be a hitt session, I cant see it getting your heart rate up that much. I wouldn't rely on this to be your only source of cardio, but it sure doesnt hurt to live an active lifestyle.

It's not my only source... shoot, I didn't even think of it as a workout of any kind until tonight. I go pretty hard at games, just because I'm entirely too competitive. I'm worse at batting practice, because I'm my worst critic. Doesn't hurt that I try to be a complete hitter, incorporating power hitting (what I practiced tonight), base-hitting, and place hitting. I had never really 'practiced' power hitting until tonight, maybe that is what helped get me worn out so quickly. Usually I can go for 15 rounds, tonight I was burnt up after 10.

Heck yeah softball is cardio, especially if your're in a leauge that hits alot of flyballs to the gaps in the outfield...and if like me you play left field.

I can't wait for the season to start at the end of April. Wednesday night doubleheaders through August. yaY!

Who cares. Concentrate on hitting the damn ball. :)

Seriously, if you're trying to break down your activity into neat little acronyms while inside a batting cage, that sounds like an excellent way to end up taking one right between the eyes, or legs. :blank:

I didn't think of this until AFTER I was done... not during. I crazy... not stupid.

Softball is not cardio.

It's an excuse to go to the pub after....

What do you do when your team goes to bat? Nothing for nearly half the game. What position would you play? In the outfield to make a catch 3-4 times a game. No, I think you are stretching it to call it cardio. I personally relax when I bat. If batting was cardio, then you need some.:bb:

I personally relax when I bat.

I can't relax when I bat. The league is way too competitive. Quick lesson for softball. The are five basic divisions of softball: A class - E class. A is the guys that get paid big money to play ball, E are the guys that play just for fun. I play in B class leagues and tournaments. If I relax, I can't focus on the ball, and where the fielders are playing so I know where to hit it. Since I am not really a strong power hitter, I have to have a good average in these leagues to be able to compete. With an average over .700, some seasons around .800, I definitely compete. When I'm not at bat... I am generally moving around, yelling and such, being a pain to umpires and small children (there are usually no small children at the games, just a saying). No time to relax in these leagues.

softball is a great way to exercise however it is also considered an anaerobic sport. If you were constantly moving, such as a class would, you would be considered doing aerobic activity.

If you have power and can run the bases for HR's....yes it is! I know I get good cardio as a SS for my team. I'm always running to the outfield for relays and I'm generally all over the field.

I would consider it more along the lines of being active than actual cardio, but hey activity is important too. To me cardio is a constant activity that is usually repetitive and your main focus is your heart rate. Softball is more of a game where you get some exercise while playing, but that's not the main goal.
