View Full Version : BMI Calculators
Thund3rbolt Mon, March 10th, 2008, 04:15 PM Helleeeeeeeeeeeeew peeps! :) Does anyone know of a really good BMI calculator. The best one I could find so far is at http://home.fuse.net/clymer/bmi/ - I seem to be scoring slightly high and I do not consider myself out of shape. 26.2 BMI - It only takes the waist measurement into account and I have muscular arms, chest, legs and pipes. I know muscle weighs more than fat so as a result I don't feel like it's very accurate since I can't thump in leg measurements, chest size, etc into the equation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That is because BMI doesn't take those values into consideration. BMI values are calculated using height and weight only. You are probably looking for a body fat calculator. Don't use the BMI if you exercise regularly and have lots of lean mass.
Thund3rbolt Mon, March 10th, 2008, 08:20 PM Yes, beginning to see what you mean. The one I found did take waist size into account and that's my Achille's heel so to speak. Mother Nature is so cruel since that seems to be the 1st place it goes and the last place for it to come off. I can pinch about 1.5" of fat on either side above my navel however that's really down from what it was say 2 years ago though. The rest of me is solid form, rock hard chest ,arms and legs so there's no way the BMI calc could be right since it says 20% body fat. ( shudder)
So my question is now is there a Body fat calculator that doesn't involve having a caliper to get the number? I don't have one and every place I've looked uses one to find the input numbers.
Thanks again

Here is a method that only requires a tape measure. Measure the four locations on your body and plug them into the spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is located here (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=28555).
It's only accurate within a couple % points. But it's repeatable and a fairly good measure of progress if you give it enough time.
mustbesix Mon, March 10th, 2008, 09:07 PM Here is another BF% calculator spreadsheet. It tracks weight & measurements then give 3 BF% formulas then gives you an average. It also calculates BMI too, but BMI is basically worthless. BTW, there's one for men and one for women.

Mustbesix, have you looked at the Weight Loss Tracker program? All I see is a place to enter "current weight", and "target weight." Then you put in your weight every day and the program tells you how you are doing compared to your goal.
I don't see any measures of bodyfat% or even any measurement entries at all. Am I looking at the right program?

Look in the bottom left corner. There are three spreadsheets within the workbook. Sheet 1 is for weight. Sheet 2 is measurements & sheet 3 is BF %. You have to go between the tabs to input all the data. Every cell that is selectable means you need to fill in that with your data. Everything that is not selectable means it is a cell reference that will be filled in automatically as long as it is inputed in the right place. The easiest way to do it is to go from sheet 1 then sheet 2, then sheet 3 filling in all available cells. If it will help I can find a way to highlight the cells that require user modification.

Thanks, I didn't look at the other sheets. Your explanation cleared things up. Now it's very understandable.
