View Full Version : Pre-Mixing Protein Shakes

I like to workout early AM before my roommates get up and I also like to have a 100% egg white protein shake before I lift (1 scoop 100% ON Egg white powder, 1 banana, 1/2 cup blueberries/blackberries, ice and water). Out of courtesy, I do not run the blender in the morning because it would wake the entire apartment up.

I have not been making these shakes because of this time/noise issue but would like to start up again. I had the bright idea to make the shake the night before and store it in the freezer then defrost real quick in the microwave in the morning.

However, I have read that pre-mixing your protein powder and leaving it for a while can break down the proteins and make the powder ineffective. Would it be better to blend all the contents in the shake less the protein powder then mix that in the morning? Or am I safe to do it all at once the night before?

Thanks for your help!

I'd blend everything beforehand and mix the protein powder in the morning. The reason is that protein in solution goes bad really quickly (bacteria love it)....Heck, even if I don't wash my protein shaker immediately after drinking, I notice it starts to smell in 20-30 mins. Putting it in the freezer might stop that, but I would just be safe and mix it in the morning.

As long as its kept chilled (not frozen, just chilled) I have never had a problem with premixing protein powder as much as 8-10 hours ahead of time and I regularly do this at work, keeping them in a cooler. 8 hours at room temperature could make a smelly mess, but in the fridge it should be fine.

I have been doing a bit more research and it looks like if frozen, it will be fine. However, to be on the safe side, I think I will blend everything but the powder then add that in the morning.

I can't imagine a huge breakdown if it is kept refrigerated. After all, milk, which is the source of most protein powders (or eggs in this case) is not perishable in 8 hours.

I suspect this is one of those myths that just arose out of nowhere scientific.

I think it is much worse than milk. I've never read anything about it, so I don't think I'm basing it on some kind of myth floating around. Maybe I'm just sensitive to it....but I notice rancid smells in just minutes at room temperature. I think if you put it in the fridge, and it smells OK in the morning, then it is probably fine.
