View Full Version : The 1000 club - Can you join it in 2008
Tomekk February 10th, 2008, 02:42 AM Plenty of solo bench, deadlift or squat challanges but none for a joint 3 effort..
So here goes..
Goal for 2008... :nod:
Deadlift= 405
Bench= 265
Squat= 330
Have yet not maxed out... But my best efforts.
Bench= 3x 200
Deadlift= 1x 315
Pulled this a year ago, just starting to get back into these.
Squats= 3x 165
Have not been training with these consistently, all has changed now...
I think if i train hard enough i may well have a chance to hit the big "One triple O" I have been cutting for quite some time now.. So when the bulk begins I should see some nice strenght gains.
Who's up for it?
zenpharaohs February 10th, 2008, 02:56 AM Who's up for it?
Sounds like a good challenge. I'm looking to get past 1300 total this year.
George February 10th, 2008, 07:54 AM Sounds like a good goal for the year. :)
My bests are pretty disproportionate right now:
Dead: 405 (a few weeks ago)
Squat: 265 (several months ago)
Bench: 185 (two years ago :lol:)
The squat was full and I'm currently trying to switch over to parallel or slightly below parallel.
I used to bench with my elbows flared and ended up stopping due to shoulder pain. I started benching again with improved form about 3 weeks ago and managed 11x150 on Friday. I think that makes my max somewhere around 200-205.
Short-term I'd like to get my squat up to 315 and the bench up to 225. That still leaves 55 pounds for the rest of the year.
Pete5 February 10th, 2008, 06:49 PM I think I can get this pretty soon. At the moment:
Bench Press: 215 pounds
Full Squat: 325 pounds
Conventional Deadlift: 355 pounds (probably higher)
I'm guessing I can pull at least 370 on the deadlift, but that's what I hit when I last tested it.
zenpharaohs February 10th, 2008, 06:57 PM I think I can get this pretty soon.
Well don't rush it, but you are already strong enough in the leg. Not a lot of guys rep 250# lunges and 200# single stiff leg deads who are under 400# in deadlift or squat. Plus your working Bulgarian sets are around 200#. It's hard to say how long because you're still growing fast, but you should quite soon have a low 400# squat and high 400# dead. The reason not to rush is to make sure your back is rock solid ready. No point getting a back injury at your age, when it's for sure your back is going to get there in it's own time.
chicanerous February 10th, 2008, 07:31 PM My bests:
DL: 430 lb
SQ: 330 lb
BP: 8x100 lb (dumbbells)
That deadlift was pulled on 12/12/07 and that squat was from when I was pulling 405, which was quite a while before. So, if I wasn't in the club as of last December, I was pretty damn close.
But, I basically took a sixty day hiatus from lifting after that pull, so I'm looking to rebuild with these two goals in mind:
1) Enter this club with the classic DL/SQ/BP by summer.
2) Enter this club with DL/SQ/MP by the end of the year because, honestly, strength that's not built standing on my own two feet doesn't interest me much.
:gl: to everyone. :tu:
Illuminate February 11th, 2008, 02:38 AM Sure, currently at
Deadlift: 365

arbitrage February 29th, 2008, 05:43 PM I haven't done a single rep max in any of these lifts since I stopped playing high school football in 1994. However I think I'm pretty close. I almost never work my legs in rep ranges lower than 5, but in the last 6 months I've done
275x3 in squat
315x3 in DL
245x3 in bench
I'm on a serious cut right now, but as soon as I get finished I'll start hitting these lifts in the low rep ranges to get to 1000. I'll check back in a few months for an update.

A lot can be attributed to "muscle memory." (That's the popular term...)
A few years back, I was in great shape...I was at/under 8% BF and "strong" in a general sense...
I did weighted pullups, leg press, cable rows, stuff like that.... I dicked around with squats here and there but never did anything heavy...and I never even attempted a deadlift until last fall....
EDIT: Man, if I had only done things right 20 years ago...I envy you in that respect Pete! You are starting out on the right path! :nod: :tucool:
In getting back into things, I fell in love with the powerlifting movements...
So I have been getting the double benefit of newbie gains + the muscle memory effect. I was "strong" before my car wreck, it was just never measured by the powerlifting movements before. Now that I'm getting my range of motion back in my ankle/knees/hips and my shoulder girdle is coming around, my joints are able to support the heavier stuff and my progress is fast.
Most of the perceived progress is getting my strength back to where I was pre-car wreck...:nod: and I'm still not there on some things...I still have stability and ROM issues in my ankle, so bulgarians and lunges are still lagging quite a bit.
I have been spending time doing some research as well. Reading books have helped, but the greatest education has come from watching it live...I have the benefit of watching our olympians train at the olympic training center here in Colorado Springs. It's awesome to watch these guys and gals. And I am learning a ton about the subtleties of some of the moves...

I've kept spreadsheets of every workout since I started SGX back in July '07.
My bulk was less than stellar, but I managed to add about 10lbs lean mass over 3 months. You are right tho, I REALLY didn't want to start cutting until I hit 185-195, but I wasn't being careful enough when I got sick and ended up feeling flabby. I'm not going to cut to 7% like I did in December, but sub 10 would be good for teh Summers.

Yeah Mike O is about as impressive as anyone I personally know. Obviously, elite competitors are at another level, but I don't come across any of them on a day to day basis. He once did an second workout of the day overhead squat workout that nobody else I know is likely to do, it was all the weights from about 135# to about 245# by 10# increments in sets of 15. He was sweating like a racehorse but he wasn't really in bad shape.

Thanks man, will do.
Brutus May 20th, 2008, 07:57 PM I'll be there, in lets say, under a month to put some pressure on me. My deadlift is lacking, but in under a month I should be at around 400lbs squat, 250lbs benchpress, and 350lbs deadlift I hope. I'll see how it goes. Getting to 1000 at age 15 would make me quite proud.
Edit: On Friday I'm going for 940lbs. 385lbs squat, 235lbs benchpress, and I'm going to go easy on the deadlift at 320lbs. After this, I'll need more weights for squats. I only have 385lbs right now, I'll have to grab a couple more 45s sometime.
Brutus May 22nd, 2008, 09:44 PM I wasn't able to get home in time to workout yesterday, so it seemed like a good reason to max out today (I don't know how I figured). It's a couple workouts sooner than I expected, but oh well. Here's how I did:
Squat - 375lbs (back caved a bit on the way up, but it was a decent lift still. I didn't wait long between the previous warmup set, that might've caused it)
Benchpress - 245lbs (slightly tweaked form, 235lbs went up very clean, I touch the chest, pause slightly, then press up with no back arch. 245lbs less symmetry between arms and a slightly longer pause at the sticking point)
Deadlift - 330lbs (man, that was heavy. In constant contact with my shins and thighs, no pause on the thighs. As far as I know, it was a good lift)
Total: 950lbs. Deadlift was way lower than I thought, squats were about where I wanted, and bench was a bit better than I expected. I'm pretty satisfied, I'll be to 1,000 in no time. 20lbs to my squat, 10lbs to my bench, and 20lbs to my deadlift won't take too long.
Edit: I just noticed it says I'm 16 years old, I guess I entered my birthdate wrong. In reality, I'm 15 years old as of now.

Great work. :tucool:
Though, what was your depth on that squat? That deadlift is pretty low in comparison. You should be able to pull significantly more than that, even after hitting a max squat.

The depth on the squat was a good deal past parallel. My back is just weak as of now, which I know. After a few more weeks on the current program I'm on, I'm going to be switching to a much more deadlift-intensive program.

Given your bench, your squat is a little low. Your deadlift is the best target for improvement though. Work on that a bit and it should go up quite a bit; the point is you will get well over 1000# if you focus on the deadlift.
And as wonderful as squats are, there's nothing wrong with focus on the deadlift for a while.

Indeed, I'd like to get my deadlift up to at least the same level as my squat, and my bench is going up considerably slower than my squat, so it'll even out eventually. Hopefully within a few months.
Edit: Also, I'm very certain I'll be able to get to 1000 and well beyond. I'm only 15 and started working out pretty recently, so I think I still have plenty of room to improve.

Replace dead lift with Power clean or Clean and Jerk.
That'll give you something more to work for!

chicanerous September 16th, 2008, 01:28 AM My bests:
DL: 430 lb
:tu:
I'm going to skip out on my #1 goal. I think I've achieved it, but, with four days left in my summer and my workouts already scheduled, I'm not going to test it. I'm still in on #2.
At the moment, I'm batting:
DL: ?
FSQ: 145 kg
MP: 85 kg
Not too informative. :lol:
However, considering that I'm stronger on FSQs than I've ever been before, I'm expecting my BSQ to be about 160 kg at the moment. My last maxes were 130 / 150, so I think that's a very good estimate (maybe slightly conservative even). I'll probably test that in the next few weeks and a 90 kg press is just over the horizon. That leaves the question mark, which asks if I can pull a 203 kg DL. I honestly don't know. Good thing I still have 3.5 months left on this challenge. :D I am definitely on track. :tucool:

NCNBilly September 18th, 2008, 10:59 AM Two weeks out from attempting baseline PRs before heading into my bulk. I still have a shot at 1000 with BP-SQ-DL if I can get my squat to a respectable weight. I spent most of the summer working on my flexibility problems and I can FINALLY do a ligitimate box squat (still working on ATG) and I'm ready to start adding weight.
It's been nearly 12 weeks since I've done a full BB dead, back squat, or BB Bench Press so I have no idea what I can do. I've been doing tons of dumbbell work, single-leg DBDLs, and front/Zercher squats since that is what my current program calls for.
