Is it ok to do so?

Probably. But egg proteins are much less bioavailable uncooked. Up to 40-50% So why?

MB,
Heat pasteurization "cooks" the egg white thus neutralizing the Avidin (found in the white) which allows for 100% amino acid utilization. Perhaps you meant "raw egg whites", which would NOT be recommended for drinking.

I guess I misunderstood some reading I'd done before. I remember digging around pubmed a year or so ago, but can't remember the specifics and would have to look for the studies I'd seen to see more of a description of the eggs in the comparisons. I didn't think pasteurization was enough "cooking" to do the work, but it's been awhile so I'm probably not remembering correctly.

I'll stand corrected because I'm sure you've done the research :D

Heat pasteurization usually occurs at a temperature of 134 degrees for about 3 minutes. This is normally enough to make the whites completely bioavailable. Pubmed might've sited a study where the heating process went below the 134.

At one time I used a product called Lara's Egg Whites that came shipped to your door with a pump handle attached to the jar. Nowadays, if I'm in a pinch, I'll get the 16 oz cartons of pasteurized liquid egg whites for around $2.00, pour in a packet of splendra, maybe some cinnamon, and pound it down. 50gr of protein. Tastes something like an eggnog. uhm...I think.

Ha, well actually....no. The moffee is a taste treat that is unequaled. I usually drink it from a brandy snifter. :)

So, Mastover, I take it that it is ok do drink the boxed egg white liquid?
It makes it much easier for me in the morning to chug a cup of it while eating my other breakfast food.

Is it pasteurized? I probably wouldn't make a habit of it. I'd rather pour it on a hot griddle and add some sodium free spices, cook up like scrambled egg whites. Or hard boil some eggs the night before to have ready for breakfast. Chugging down a carton of egg whites would be better off during a time of inconvenience during the course of a busy day. I would try and take my time to enjoy breakfast. But if you can't, I see nothing wrong with your idea, every once in a while.
