House Bill No. 282 (http://billstatus.ls.state.ms.us/documents/2008/pdf/HB/0200-0299/HB0282IN.pdf)

An act to prohibit certain food establishments from serving food to any person who is obese, based on criteria prescribed by the state department of health; to direct the department to prepare written materials that describe and explain the criteria for determining whether a person is obese and to provide those materials to the food establishments; to direct the department to monitor the food establishments for compliance with the provisions of this act; and for related purposes.

Should this pass, scales will appear at the door of restaurants, people with BMIs of 30 or higher won’t be allowed to be served. And to comply with government regulations, restaurants will have to keep records of patrons' BMIs.~ Junkfood Science (http://junkfoodscience.blogspot.com/2008/01/no-fat-people-allowed-only-slim-will-be.html)

Unfortunately I don't think I can voice my opinion on this subject without going on a profanity filled political tirade which is a no no.:nono:

I'll use smileys to express my opinion.

Most legislatures in the U. S. have a silly season where all sorts of weird bills which have no hope get proposed by members who have a correspondingly weird agenda or axe to grind. Usually once every year or two years. I don't know if this is from the silly season in Mississippi (since I don't follow their legislature). The aim of such bills is publicity. And the media, if the news is slow enough, plays along.

This looks like a prime example. Note that in one news story we find:

The proposal would allow health inspectors to yank the permit from any restaurant that "repeatedly" feeds extremely overweight customers.

The bill, written by GOP Rep. W. T. Mayhall Jr., was referred to the Judiciary and Public Health committees, but The Jackson Free Press doesn't expect it to garner much support in the statehouse.

About two-third of Mississippians are considered overweight or obese, according to a recent analysis of federal health data. (http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2008/02/bill-would-make.html)

So everyone put their "down with the gummint" pants back on. This sort of junk happens all the time; maybe you just weren't aware of this little sideshow attraction of legislative bodies.

I saw this the other day.

Yeah, it's stupid, but I don't see how it could withstand civil rights and constitutional challenges.

Just imagine how many restaurants would go bankrupt. Every single Golden Corral (http://www.goldencorral.com/menu/hot.asp) would have to shut down within a week.

The legislator is probably a tobacco smoker, seeking perspective. But having worked for the legislature, Zen is right. There are many non-serious bills sent to committee.

Well, good thing if it isn't serious....because that bill is about as stupid as it gets.

Yeah the "Look at me I'm a legislator!" party hat doesn't get old enough fast enough for some of these people.

People care about the Constitution? That's news to me. I was only aware of one.
