Hope this isn't a stupid question, but I want to start adding things to my oatmeal. Up to this point, I've just eaten it plain with a little cinnamon and splenda. If I want to add something like PB or protein powder, do I add those thing before or after I microwave it. I wasn't sure how PB would do in the microwave. I don't want things exploding on me. :o
Thanks.

When I do it I add whey to the oats BEFORE adding the water. Then I slowly stir in the water to try and avoid the whey coming together to form lumps. If you microwave it - every 30 seconds or so, take it out the microwave and give it a stir, and repeat until it's cooked.
You might not even need to stir it to stop it from clumping together, but I just do it as a precaution anyway :)
Never tried PB in my oatmeal though...
Edit: Found this, where its recommended you add it AFTER cooked. Whatever you prefer, I guess http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/sclark54.htm

I add Natty PB after I have nuked the oatmeal.
It melts the PB and mixes in nicely...

IME, adding protein prior to cooking is asking for protein concrete. I always add that in once it's done, and use enough water than when the oats are cooked, they are still a bit moister than you'd normally want them so the protein powder will absorb.
Other stuff, add first. Maybe leave berries until the end so they don't break down, but that's a personal taste thing.

Ever tried just adding salt, no sweeteners? It's a nice change in flavor... :eat:

I love it with chunky PB. I guess protein could be good too. I should give it a try, but I wouldn't add it before. Very hot water tend to make protein disgusting clumps in my experience.
