Is McCann's any different than the stuff I can buy in bulk at the grocery store? I've seen McCann's often but have never been able to justify the cost in my head.

Same thing in a fancy tin.

good to know! i've not seen steel cut oats in bulk here.

a little inconvenient to have to cook them for 30 minutes instead of just nuking the pressed oats, but supposed to be a lot better for you.

thanks for the tip on the bulk stuff. going to see if someone around here carries it for when i run out of the mccann's.

It's not that much better for you than rolled oats. It's slightly less processed is all. However, the taste and mouth feel is superior :tu:

Look in your natural foods store for the bulk bins. Steel cut oats are generally about $2/lb in my area.

BTW, Quaker Oats has started selling steel cut oats as well. Not sure about cost compared to the other options.

i'll be on the lookout for the quaker steel cut oats.

they do have a 'meatier' texture to them and a 'nuttier' flavor. but i'm certainly not manly enough to toss them uncooked into my shakes like i have the rolled oats .

I like to throw steel cut oats in yogurt. Kinda like granola with a bit of crunch. :eat:

You can microwave the Steel cut oats too. I never cook them for the full 30 minutes. I usually throw a half cup of oats and 1 1/2 cups water into a large microwave dish and heat for 7-10 minutes (uncovered until water is gone). This way they stay a little more textured and don't turn to mush. The consistency is more chewy and better in my opinion. Add cinnamon, PB, and splenda.

Part of cooking steel cut oats is a soak in water, too. Soak them overnight, and they are easier to cook. I'll bring them to a boil for 10 minutes before I go to bed, cover them and cut the heat off, then they'll cook better in the morning.
