I know that doing to many lifts in the gym can slow progress. Would doing a couple sets with a pull/chin up bar and pushups a couple times a week effect anything negatively? This is a very broad question, I know.

Maybe early on. Once you get to a certain point, it becomes an endurance workout and you can't really do "too many". Endurance work has its own benefits.
