Hi, I am a longtime reader and first time poster. I used articles here to lose 20 lbs of fat and gained muscle. Thanks for you all.

Here is my problem.

I have huge square shoulders. People ask me if I am a football player. I have almost no neck and my shoulders does not drop. I know part of this is genetics. But, I still want to know any way to make my shoulders drop and my neck appear. The trainer I met in the gym told me I must stretch neck muscles and that stretching is future.
I am a bit skeptic on this ..as we are not giraffe's.

Are barbell shrugs gonna help me? or the traps goin to make my neck shorter?

pls help.

My only other option is to start eating leaves from longer trees :D

I would like to be taller. Congrats on the progress, but some things you just need to accept :)

I don't see how stretching your neck would help.
As for barbell shrugs, those are really the opposite of what you want to be doing if your goal is a clearly defined neckline. Building up your traps will only obscure your neck more. Some people like that, though. :)

Can you post a picture or two? There might be other issues involved (maybe postural or fat).

I agree. I don't think there's anything special you need to do. Actually, I prefer the square-shouldered look and would consider it to be a genetic advantage.

I don't think you should either avoid or specifically target traps, but instead fit them into a well-rounded lifting program. To keep a balance, look at the areas other than your shoulders. For example, your broad shoulders might make your legs look thin in comparison, so maybe you'd like to give those some extra work.

I would fit a couple of shrug sets in your workout. Heavy ones, BB is at thighs, arms straight, shoulder width apart. Now shrug.

Barbell shrugs will help slope your shoulders by raising your traps. So will deadlifts.

Trying to make your neck look longer is a tough one, but I would suggest making sure you have squats and deadlifts to keep your posture happy. How you carry yourself has a lot to do with how people perceive your neck.
