I drink Mate every day. I usually get it from relatives in Argentina. Excellent stuff and a great coffee replacement. I would not say its a water replacement though ;)

Can someone explain to me the benefits of Yerba Mate? Can someone spell out the pronounciation, as well? My curiosity is piqued :)

I drink it plain. It does have an aquired taste, however, there are certain steps that you need to take during preparation to avoid a bitter taste. You can also purchase naturally flavoured versions as well. During prep you must:
Add 2-3tablespoons per 8 ounces
Wet the leaves with cold water and allow to sit a moment
Add hot water, but not boiling hot water.
Allow to steep properly
Enjoy!
There are many benefits to Yerba Mate pronounced Yer-bah Mah-teh. or just Mah-teh. It gives a nice, even energy boost without the crash that coffee would give. It also produces a mild thermogenic effect which is excellent for fat loss. Apparently helps detoxify the body, reduce blood pressure and boosts immunity. There are a slew of other benefits, many similar to green tea. Best made in a traditional gourd with bombilla, but a french press works well or a special sports cup that I take with me everywhere.

Probably there's a big placebo component to the differing responses to yerba mate.
