I thought that weight training would release endorphins and make me feel better but lately I have been feeling really depressed. I'm happy about my changes but I think the shift in testosterone has made me really depressed. I've been weight training for about 3 months (actually it will be my 3 month anniversary tomorow) and have grown more and more depressed since I started. Is there any reason for this? Also, is it solveable or anything or do I just have to live with it?

Are you positive it is the weight training? Have any other factors in your life changed?

The only reason i could think of for your depression would be you are focussing too much on lifting and fitness and not enjoying the rest of your life...do you have other hobbies, hang out with frineds still, etc?

Do you have any history with depression, or is it just a chronic bad mood? My guess (and this is just a guess) is that the lifting is depleting a lot of energy from your body. If you don't compensate with a better than normal diet and adequate rest, lifting will really take it's toll on you. I know when I get well into a cutting phase with reduced calories, my temper gets a bit shorter.

On the other hand, if you do have a history with depression, then you should talk to your psychiatrist about it.

I'm not a doctor and won't even pretend to diagnose you over the internet. No, you don't have to live with it! Pick up the phone right now and make an appointment with your family doctor. You don't have to call a psychiatrist. A number of things can cause depression and there are some fairly simple medications that can help. I'm speaking from personal experience. Make the call to your doctor. You'll be glad that you did.

I, too, have experienced definite energy swings following my twice-a-week weight lifting schedule, but really it's more of a lethargic "ugh" than it is depression. I've found that I can get past it quickly if I can find the will power to get off my butt and do some cardio, and vitamins and a little sugar in my diet seem to help as well (I don't do well on a low carb diet).

Doesn't mean my experience is in any way applicable to what you're dealing with, but I do recall reading somewhere (Muscle&Fitness, I believe) that overtraining can induce depression, at least until you allow yourself to heal up.

Heck, if you've been lifting weights more or less religiously for the last three months, you're probably due for a week off anyway.

Just my two cents.

I dunno... to me weight training is like therapy. Anytime I'm down, when I hit the gym I relieve all my stress and depression. I've never felt depressed due to lifting.

I guess everyone's different?
