View Full Version : First Week at a Gym, couple of insights
optheta January 10th, 2008, 01:27 AM Okay so i officially been going to the gym for a week as of today. I finally was able to pull enough money together to get a membership.
The first time i went into the Gym i notice that a large number of the people who go there all they do is Curls which was a shock to me not just the little guys did curls but even the guys who were fairly ripped pretty much through there entire workout they did curls.
I mean i wasnt staring at anybody not doing any work but during my rests i was just looking around and noticing it, i wasnt trying to be noisy just curious thats all.
It just shocked me to even see the big guys just doing that. Also it amazes me at how many people use momentum when they do there exercise or cheat for the set. Just wanted to kinda share my first week at the gym.
Granted im no muscle man hardly close but it seemed the majority just wings it and gets big.
BTW funny thing one the fitness trainers there was working with somebody and eating peanuts while they were helping the person do crunches the client was also some what obese i mean how messed up is that blatantly eating in front of them while there exercising.

Well -- If they are big, muscular guys, then they do more than just curls. You can't put on much lean mass with a curls-only workout.

Depending on the exercise, using a little "english" isn't necessarily a bad thing. Obviously, you don't want to be haphazardly swinging weights around from the very first rep, but, to squeeze out a couple of extra reps, it isn't so bad.

Maybe he was just getting some healthy fats. Now, if he were snacking on potato chips....then that wouldn't be so great.
docutech January 10th, 2008, 09:51 AM I see this daily in my gym. From people holding on for dear life on a treadmill to those wanna be's who swing 80lb dumbbells pretending to be doing curls. Franky, I pay them no attention whatsoever. If I did, my workout would consist of people watching. I am there to do my thing, I get in my zone and stay there until I am done. Don't waste your time looking at others. Utilize your time wisely in the gym because you paid for it! :bb:

The gym I go to only has one.
I have gotten to the point that I ask people to go do BB curls somewhere else and that I need the squat rack for say....oh I don't know.... SQUATS?!
That way my SNL Churchlady impression.....;)
akm3 January 10th, 2008, 02:49 PM This is why I'm always so grateful I'm lucky enough to be able to have a powerrack at home.
I never have to worry about idiots curling in the only squat rack.
Or gorgeous women out squatting me.

Or go in the morning before work. I have the whole weight room to myself. After work, not so much!

I used to have my own cage before I moved into my new home. Believe it or not, there just wasn't enough room for it. I miss that thing...the variety of the gym is hard to beat though..its just the idiots that make it hard sometimes. I agree that an early morning workout is the way to go if you can pull it off. Although, I recall one morning when two old geezers got into a fight. Sometimes the oldies can be worse than the high schoolers doing endless curls...
pedurrod January 11th, 2008, 07:56 AM Optheta,
You're right, most gyms have a lot of people who could be in much better shape if they knew what they're doing. Don't waste your time with them. Do your thing. You will improve dramatically if you do things right. However, I think your goal of 10 pounds of lean mass in April is too optimistic. I could be wrong, but I think that is going to be very very difficult. It will take longer.
Good luck.
Croz January 11th, 2008, 11:28 AM At my old gym, when I'd work out on Friday afternoon, it was always full of the same 5 or 6 guys doing every known variation of the curl to make their arms look good before they went out clubbing that night. I thought it was pretty clever myself.
It's always tough to resist the siren song of the mirror muscles. (arms, chest, abs)
My favorite 2 gym personalities are the "hey, this is my personal gym," guy and the grunter.
The "my personal gym guy" is the guy who winds up marking his territory by having his shit at every damn station in the place. He's always doing some kind of circuit that uses every bench, the pulldown, etc, and gets really cheesed if you get 'in his way.'
The grunter was a guy who was doing all his lifts with just the bar. Now I don't make fun of anyone's weights, but this guy grunted like an olympic lifter trying to clean 1100# with each rep.

I was wondering who was staring at me :o
