He's six years old. The goal here, just to make it clear, is for me to spend time with him, get him to learn to keep his back safe while lifting. He sees me work out and so he wants to lift as well. There are no strength or conditioning goals. Hypertrophy will take care of itself in about ten years. zenpharaohs January 5th, 2008, 01:47 PM Conventional deadlift: 12x5kg Bent over barbell row: 12x5kg Military press: 5x5kg Barbell back squat: 4x5kg He can easily pull this weight but we aren't going to add anything until he can focus on keeping his back set. The deads were all different from one to the next. The rows were all uniform but his back was set with a constant bend. Early days. zenpharaohs January 13th, 2008, 07:24 PM RDL: 12x8kg Squats: 12x8kg Bent over barbell rows: 12x8kg Standing press: 12x5kg He wanted to have plates on so we had the pair of 0.5kg and the pair of 1kg plates except for the press. zenpharaohs January 21st, 2008, 08:27 PM Workout done on 1/20/2008 RDL: 12x8kg Squats: 12x8kg Bent over barbell rows: 12x8kg Standing press: 12x5kg zenpharaohs January 27th, 2008, 07:50 PM 5 pushups RDL: 12x5kg Squats: 12x5kg Bent over barbell rows: 12x5kg Standing press: 12x5kg zenpharaohs February 3rd, 2008, 07:47 PM Deadlift: 12x5kg Bent over barbell rows: 12x5kg Standing press: 12x5kg Squats: 12x5kg 12 pushups :tucool: zenpharaohs February 10th, 2008, 07:13 PM 12 pushups Deadlift: 12x5kg Bent over barbell rows: 12x5kg Standing press: 12x5kg Squats: 12x5kg :claplow: zenpharaohs February 14th, 2008, 08:33 PM Awarded first black tip on white karate belt. :tucool: J_W February 15th, 2008, 01:22 AM Awarded first black tip on white karate belt. :tucool: Yay! :claphigh: You know, I think your son uses more weight than most women at my gym (and some guys, too). :blank: zenpharaohs February 15th, 2008, 01:33 AM Yay! :claphigh: You know, I think your son uses more weight than most women at my gym (and some guys, too). :blank: In his case, it's not about increasing the weight though. He's going to grow fast anyway, and his muscles probably won't respond to resistance in much of a useful way until puberty. I think it's valuable for him to know how to protect his back while lifting and to have some idea of his own strength. Since we only do this once a week, his body's response to load is determined a lot more by his other activities than by this. Obviously, at his age, he doesn't have the hormones necessary to make any huge gains. I think it's great that he's starting off so early, though . zenpharaohs February 17th, 2008, 10:32 PM 3 laps on a 1/12 mile track. 12 pushups. My son is 4 years old, and he loves to play around in our home gym while I'm working out (I only let him do this once in a while). I have some 1 lb. dumbbells for him to mess with. Seltzer May 25th, 2008, 07:21 PM Zen, big kudos for introducing your son to fitness at such an early age. Hopefully it will be lessons that will stick with him the rest of his life. IROC-Z May 25th, 2008, 10:33 PM I think he is starting to understand what keeping the back straight means. That's great! At what age did he first ask you to start teaching him about fitness? I'm going to attempt to teach my son as much as he wants to know about fitness and working out - but I figure I will always let him ask me first. That way I won't feel like I am pushing my interests onto him. I just hope that he continues to take an interest in it, much like your son is.:tu: zenpharaohs May 25th, 2008, 11:36 PM That's great! At what age did he first ask you to start teaching him about fitness? When he was about two and a half and saw me lifting. So I got him some one pound dumbells. Eventually he took to lifting my EZ-curl bar for deadlifts on his own, and that is when I decided to get him the lighter (but much more "official" looking straight bar). zenpharaohs July 26th, 2008, 09:18 PM Four miles bike ride.
