View Full Version : My VDiet Experience
sodomojo December 25th, 2007, 09:27 PM So, after much research, and thought, I have made the decision to do the Velocity Diet. (http://www.t-nation.com/findArticle.do?article=05-009-diet) I begin tomorrow. Instead of Metabolic Drive which is recommended, I will be using Nitrean. 28 days, 4 solid meals, and the goal is to lose about 10 lbs of fat. Right now, I'm right about 175lbs, and around 15% BF. (Accumeasure says 14.6%) So, if I lose 10 lbs of fat, I should end up being around 10% BF. I'll make it my goal to get on every day and post something. I look forward to this new journey.
My workout program will be the Chad Waterbury program he built for 10/10. Since it is a program that must be purchased, I won't post it. It is a basic circuit based, full body program.
Feel free to ask any questions at any time.
Summary of Stats:
LBS-175
BF-14.6
Waist-35.5 (measured at belly button)
jgroover December 26th, 2007, 12:20 PM Good Luck to you! I had looked into that diet at the end of the summer to get in a good month or two before i got married, but the dedication it takes was too much for that time. Now for this spring i think i'm going to do it with a small adjustment in supplements like you are doing.
Since i didn't get into it enough i can't give you any advice from experience but one thing i know i wanted to be careful of was to get plenty of sleep.
Again good luck
sodomojo December 26th, 2007, 09:42 PM Day 1 is nearly over. I've felt just fine, a bit hungry at times, but overall good. I did a circuit program at the gym and then walked for 20 minutes at a 6 incline and 3.7 speed. I have one more shake for the day. I wish it stayed this easy, but I'm sure it won't.:)
Banditfist December 26th, 2007, 10:48 PM Cool! I did the V-diet last May. Great results. Jk0 and I are starting together come January 7th. We are going to start a journal as well.
Good luck.

What kind of results did you have on the VDiet?
Banditfist December 27th, 2007, 09:09 AM What kind of results did you have on the VDiet?
I lost 18 pounds: 224-206.
I also baselined my cholesterol prior to the diet; 220.
I did the diet for 24 days (Preakness got in the way and there was waaay too much alcohol to consume). My cholesterol ended up dropping 78 points to 142.
Day 5 was the worst for me. I felt sick and very lethargic. I loved the rigidity of the diet. There are very few questions or tweaks that you can or should do.
Just make sure that you get a protein mix with casein protein. It is slower to digest so you don't get hungry as quick. TrueProtein (http://www.trueprotein.com) is my favorite. I use the TPC formula. I love the fact that I can get it shipped in food grade bags verses tubs. I have plenty of tubs that I can just reuse.

Yeah, I got AT Large Protien. Theirs has the whey/casein/egg mix.
Did you gain any weight back after you went off of it?
Banditfist December 27th, 2007, 04:29 PM Yeah, I got AT Large Protien. Theirs has the whey/casein/egg mix.
Did you gain any weight back after you went off of it?
Sure. If you eat and drink like I did, I expected.
I wanted to lose weight for running more than anything.
cnjlakes December 27th, 2007, 07:19 PM Good luck! I just read the T-nation article and was surprised at the intensity! Consider me subscribed to this thread!
I assume from your stats that you had a pretty clean diet before starting this?

Yes, I ate pretty clean before. I did the Cut Diet for 11 weeks and got leaner, around 12% or so. Then I started Waterbury's 10/10 program, but then I thought why not do the VDiet, and then once I'm done with those 28 days, I'll go back to Waterbury's 10/10.

Day 2-173.4
Day 2 wasn't too bad. I got some pistachio's for Christmas, and as I was peeling them for my famiy, I snuck in a small handful. I've drank some Crystal Light, which should be fine. I got my Nitrean today, and I'm so mad at myself for getting Strawberry. I got some Strawberry from Black Star Labs and people said it was great, and I got it and it was disgusting. Then when I was reading the ATL thread, people talked about how good Strawberry was, and much to my disappointment, I had to chug it down and hold my breath. It tasted awful. (No offense Chris) I'm not sure if anybody can get Strawberry right.
Anyway, I'm 1/14th of the way done, and down 4 lbs. I'm on pace to lose about 110 lbs. That'll put me down to around 65 lbs! I knew the first day I would lose quite a bit because of the Christmas Eve/Christmas junk. Anyway, I'll keep updating this, not sure if I'll weigh myself everyday, probably not.
Banditfist December 27th, 2007, 10:16 PM Yeah, I lost 8 pounds the first week. It does tapper off, but the scale will keep going down.
Quit sneaking those nuts!!!! Do it right!
Naturegirl December 28th, 2007, 02:28 AM I'll be cheering along with you :claphigh: (Also for Banditfist and Jk0)
Due to lack of funds for the next couple months and a whole lot of old protein powder taking up space in my cupboards, I'll be starting my own version of the diet tomorrow. It's definitely not the diet, so I wont be claiming to have actually done Chris' diet, but mine follows the same general principles.
That's a bummer about the strawberry :(
One thing I learned long ago for myself is that I never know how well I'll really like the flavor of the powder until I've bought the whole darn tub and cracked it open. Another thing is the possibility of getting sick of the flavor. That's why I always buy flavorless protein powders now. The slight taste of powdered milk is way more tolerable than the artificial flavors. (I have a tub of ON creamy vanilla casein that's just like cake batter though, and I mix a teaspoon in with the flavorless stuff and that's alright.)
One reason I'm doing it without flavored protein powder also, is to find out if I can resensitize my taste buds to natural foods.
Chris talked about the way the diet really changed people's food preferences (was this a factor in your decision to do the diet?) and I'm going to try and take it a step further by eliminating the taste of sweetness itself as well, for 30 days.
I like Crystal Light too, that and diet Barq's root beer saved me the last time I successfully cut. It's going to be hell without them this time around! :scared:
Anyway, good luck! This should be quite the experience for you and no doubt very successful :tu:

Day 3-172.2
Day 3 is in the books. Down another 1.2 lbs today. I would imagine that around days 3-4, all the water weight is down.
My workout today pretty much sucked. I did a circuit and almost puked. I think I will have to go a diff route as opposed to a circuit.
I was very irritable today, not sure if the diet had anything to do with it or not.
I was pretty tempted a few times today with some cravings. I never gave in, but I'm going to have to get used to this feeling of being hungry.
I'm 10% done. Whoopie!
Lo0p December 29th, 2007, 03:29 AM Ok, you people have my curiosity piqued. I've noticed a couple of experienced members chime in on this thread saying they've lost pounds using this diet, but thats to be expected with a protocol like this.
My question is...were the results good?
It sounds kind of extreme, and... well insufficient. I'm a big advocate of the "feed your body what it needs" approach, and a Swoldier for LIFE. I cannot really imagine getting results better than I do with SGX, I shred fat like a maniac and gain lean simultaneously.
I've read about the V-Diet, but I trust YOUR opinions more than what I read on the internet. For the members who've done it, did you really like your RESULTS? Don't give me stats unless they're significant...what changes did you see in the mirror?
28 days isn't really a long time I guess, kinda hard to kill yourself in 28 days...eh I let it slip, I think that last sentence might really capture what I feel about a program like this...maybe, I'm not sure I'd love to hear your opinions. --evan

We'll see what happens. If I looked like you (I'm sure because of your hard work, committment, and self discipline) I wouldn't even think about doing it. But I've never been able to lose that last little bit, probably my own fault, so I thought I would try this. Over at T Nation, people really seem to be drinking the cool aid. If it doesn't work, so what, I'll go with something else, right? It's only 28 days.

I have done SGX and the V-Diet. They are very different. I have a low opinion of SGX in that it does not differ very much from typical diets like the ratio diets of 50/40/20 or 40/40/20. SGX works for some people and not for everyone. V-diet is probably the same, but it works for me.
The V-Diet is both radical and extremely structured. The enthusiast like myself do not allow/like for deviations of the diet. It is limited to 28 days because it is extreme. It is meant for quick fat loss and preservation of muscle in the shortest period of time.
What your body needs? The V-diet provides this. The body needs protein and EFA (fats). There is no such thing as an essential carb. Carbs just make life more enjoyable. But, with limited carbs, cardio is not discouraged. Doing cardio like running on this diet will cause muscle loss.
My results were great. I was needing to lose some weight for some running competitions that I was signed up to do. I was also very curious. I only did it for 24 days, because Preakness is an incredible event in Baltimore. Basically, I wanted to be a drunken dumbass. I started at 224. 24 days, 18 pounds later at 206. I gained back 4 pounds of water weight immediately; not unexpected.

Day 4-171.0
Today will be my first meal. I'm so used to having cheats on Saturdays that I decided I would do each of my meals for the next 4 Saturdays. Tonight I will have some steak, sweet potato with Splenda on it, and vegetables. I'm shorting a shake today and doing without the flax seed in two of my shakes to lower the calories.
For those of you that have done the VDiet, did you walk every day or just on off days? How far did you walk? It seems that the first VDiet says to walk 2-4 miles, then the second version of it says to walk 20-30 minutes, but perhaps I don't remember correctly.

Good cheat meal.
I normally did the stationary bike, but ensured to keep my heart rate below 131 bpm for 30-35 minutes.
I did this on my own prerogative. I seem to remember Chris advocating no cardio at all.
George December 29th, 2007, 05:12 PM I don't know if you've been following the T-nation physique clinic stuff but one of the members, Gus (http://www.t-nation.com/readPhysClin.do?id=1852678), has recently started the velocity diet as well. Shugart's his coach so there's some nice commentary on it.
Good luck with the rest of the month! :gl:

Actually, he recommends daily NEPA. Non-Exercise Physical Activity. Basically stuff like long walks. Low intensity like you did.
I was just going to post the link to the T-Nation thread George posted. So I'll just add the public one (http://www.t-nation.com/tmagnum/readTopic.do?id=1852688), too.
This diet has always fascinated me for some reason.

Day 5-170.2
Yesterday I had my solid meal. Yes I know it was a bit early, but I thought it would work best for me if I had them all on Saturdays. I had 4oz steak with seasoning, 6 oz sweet potato with splenda and 1.3 cups of brocolli/cauliflower/peas with 'I can't believe it's not butter' SPRAY. The meal was fantastic, I'm looking forward to having the same thing next Saturday.
I can't tell any difference as of yet, but I'm not expecting to. Cravings haven't been too bad. Drinking mainly Crystal Light as opposed to water.
George-Thanks so much for that link to the TNation Physique Clinic, in that Sugart clarifies a lot of things and really spells things out. I know that he is specifically talking to GUS, but the principles and formulas remain the same.
I just ordered SURGE. I wish I would have had it from day one. The $12 shipping hurts, thats pricey, but at least its priority.
I hope its okay, but I'm not talking fish oil capsuls, I'm taking Carlsons fish oil. Its supposed to be the very best Fish Oil, (according to the bottle :D) says Chad Waterbury.
I'm going to start the Waterbury routine that he has designed for the VDiet. Before, I was doing one he had on his 10/10 program.
Once again George, thanks for the link, it really helped me out.

The weight is continuing to come off. I had a good workout today and then followed it with 30 minutes of NEPA. I picked up some Fiber Choice tablets and will be taking two of those per day. I noticed my stomach is growling a bit more than it usually does. I don't really like the feeling of beeing hungry. I go back to work on Wednesday, so it'll probably be a bit easier as far as being tempted when I don't have so much time on my hands.

My wife is making this unbelievable sesame beef rice dish right now, so I had to leave the room and go into the office. I can still smell it, but not as much. I took my daughter to the mall today and as we walked through the food court to use the restroom, the food smelled unbelievably good, and looked even better. My cravings are starting to become stronger it seems.
I tell myself that I am strong, and I have the willpower to do this, it's just tough.

I remember people heating up their food in the microwave outside my office. It was like torture. Just wrong. I think that the V-diet actually intensifies your sense of smell. I remember having cravings, but with the schedule of meals, it was not as big a deal...pretty much when you got a craving, it was time to "eat".
One an earlier post you had about t-nation koolaid: I agree. Chris has been developing the diet since I did it. He has made tweaks. When I did it, he called for no cardio. There was no NEPA. Now, it looks like he has a whole V-diet package of products from T-nation. T-nation is a for-profit site. I don't fault them for pushing their products. In fact, I remember struggling to make sure that I had everything that I needed. I still haven't bought anything from them, nor do I intend to. TrueProtein (http://www.trueprotein.com) has everything I need, and to only be "eating" the same protein shake for 28 days are your primary taste....for the love of God, it better be palatiable.
When I did the diet, I had no idea whether I could do it. I did not post anything about doing it until I was done. There is no doubt that it is a hard diet to do. But, the results were great for me...which is why I am doing it again.
I got my shipment of protein from TrueProtein last week. I think that I have everything set for a go on Monday.
Keep up the good work!

Over the past 5 days or so I've snuck in an occasional small handful of pisatchio's, and little things like that. Nothing to throw my calories way out of whack or anything, but I shouldn't be doing it. I've been 100% today, and plan to keep it that way. Why else would put myself through this tough diet if I'm not gonna do it right, right?:D Roughly 70 more shakes till I'm done. :tucool:

I had a good workout today, followed by some Metabolic Drive. Man, that stuff is sweet. Sweet as in sugary. 46 grams of sugar. I had a pretty easy day today, not too tempted. I do think about food a lot and one my cheat meal will be when I am done with this thing. I have lost a remarkable % of fat, and retained the muscle quite well. Extremely effective, but often its hard at night when my pregnant wife is snacking and I'm sitting there, and to snack I get a glass of Crystal Light or SF Kool-aid.

You know like those made to order omlets they make at Embassy Suites with the spinach, jalapenos, green onions, green and red peppers, ham or steak, reduced fat cheese, tobasco? Mmmmmmmmmmmm.... Any ideas for my solid meal?

My first solid food meal is tomorrow, and I'm having the guiltless chicken platter from chili's. It's by no means gourmet, but it's got perfect macros for PWO meal (plus its half a mile from my house.) I generally eat it about every 2 weeks PWO. It's got 580 cals, 85 carb, 40 pro, and 9 fat.
BTW, its a grilled chicken breast with rice, corn, and veggies.

Day 17-165.2
I had a good workout this morning. I push myself but not to the point where I want to throw up. (Once in a while that happens, but not much). I went grocery shopping tonight for the family, and bought some of my food for my solid meal tomorrow. I bought my steak's that I'll grill and some yellow potato's. It'll be good. I'm proud of myself at the willpower I've had. So many other times, I would have given in late at night when my wife and I are watching TV or when she is eating something, or when I make the kids dinner. Not now. If nothing else, this program shows me the dedication it takes to get to a low BF% and it will help me in the future as well.

Still going. It was just a bit of a pain to update everyday and I didn't think too many people were reading it, so I let it go a few days without updates.

Day 22-162.8
I'm still going strong. In the homestretch now. I had a great solid meal on Saturday, which unfortunately, for the first time on the VDiet, turned into a little cheat with some sweets. Not a huge one, but more then I shuold have. The next day, I was up 5 lbs, but as you can see, I am right back down. I'm sure it was nearly all water weight. I'm excited to finish this up next week. I am more then happy with the results, and I would recommend this program to anybody looking to quickly shed BF. From my pictures (which I will post soon) I have dropped nearly all fat. By my estimates, I am now about 10-11% BF. I just need to put some more muscle on my frame.
Once I am done with the VDiet, I am thinking of going to the TNT Diet. I operate well with little carbs, and as a severe endomorph, I don't do well with many carbs in my plan, even if they are all healthy, and spaced out well. I bought the TNT Diet book and read through it, and will be starting next week after the VDiet. Hopefully it will help me shed the last little bit of BF and start gaining some lean muscle mass.

Day 24-161.8
Almost there. At this point it is such a routine. I like that aspect of it. I admit I'm a little scared when I go back to eating 'normal'. I don't want to gorge myself and feel guilty and undone any of what I've done.
sodomojo January 20th, 2008, 01:01 PM Start-177.6
End 164.8
Total Weight Lost-12.8 lbs
Not sure of total fat lost, most of it was fat you can tell from the pictures.
Waist Before-35.5
Waist After-32
(Measured at Belly Button)
I ended a couple days early. I hadn't lost any weight this week and I always like to start my new programs on a Sunday/Monday, so I went ahead and ended it. It was tough as nails, but the results speak for themselves. Looking back at my before pictures, I can't believe I was like that and that I thought I looked alright. Thats what 'normal cutting' with 'healthy' carbs does to me. Anyhow, I will be starting on TNT today/tomorrow. I am starting on building some lean muscle mass without packing on too much fat, hopefully TNT can do that for me. I am starting with phase E because I've already throuoghly depleted my glycogen stores, and I have less then 5 lbs and 3 inches to lose. Anyhow, accumeasure has me at 12.7% BF. If I had to guess, I would say I am around 10.5-11%, but who knows. All I know is that this isn't what I thought I would look like at 10.5-11% BF! I figured I would have a lot more muscles. Time to build 'em I guess!
Anyway, I appreciate any feedback and questions on my VDiet and of course BF estimates are always welcome. Thanks.
arbitrage January 20th, 2008, 09:08 PM Great job. I will be interested to see if you continue to lose on the TNT plan or if you gain some weight. If you continue to lose, then that's what I'll do when I get off.
Will you post an update in this journal in a week or two and let us know if your still losing or have started gaining?
Gorilla January 20th, 2008, 09:22 PM Congrats on making it through :tucool: You should try out the Anabolic diet instead. Would probably be a better fit for you and has alot of info available. Either way, good luck with the next phase.

TNT looks pretty much in the same vein as AD, but with a little more simplicity. It allows for different eating styles depending on goals from what I've seen, instead of just changing calorie levels. In other words, depending on goals, you might have carbs near workouts, or you might not and only have them to reload periodically.
I'd say it's a decent choice. I haven't read the whole book, just the t-nation and Men's Health pieces on it along with some skimming in the bookstore.

Not really a huge fan of Men's health plans, but if it works, thats cool. Should be interesting seeing a member here test it out.

They've published some decent authors lately. Berardi, Dos Remedios, etc.
This (http://www.t-nation.com/readArticle.do?id=1670854) is the t-nation interview with one of the authors. And this page (http://www.menshealth.com/cda/article.do?site=MensHealth&channel=weight.loss&category=transform.2007&conitem=671b1d8690fd2110VgnVCM20000012281eac____) gives you an overview at Men's Health.
Banditfist January 21st, 2008, 09:22 AM Great job Sodo!
Glad you have the mental capacity to switch to another diet to keep with your goals.
sodomojo January 28th, 2008, 10:03 PM I just thought I would give an update on my first week off the VDiet and first week on TNT. I ended the VDiet at 164.8. I ended the first week of TNT Diet at 164.0. I had a real cheat day between the two and I've never felt such gastrinal intestinal problems in my life. It was absolutely horrible. Anyhow, I have the flu now, so I've missed two workouts. Trying to stay low carb, but get some other nutrients in me, and cheating a bit with low carb fudgeciscle and ice cream cuz its nicer on the throat. :tu:

Congrats on not gaining any weight! Keep us posted in another week or two.
