A couple of my friends and I have decided to make a trip to the city to see the ball drop in Times Square. I've been to NYC before and have a friend who was born and lives in Cliffside Park in NJ however I've never been for New Years. We're looking to get a hotel and I was just wondering if anyone else here has been there for New Years? If so, do you have any pointers for people like myself such as areas to stay, which way to enter, etc?

On a side note: It took a lot of will power to not make the title of this thread a joke about testicles.

It's a fun thing to do once. If you want to see all the shows at the front you have to get there about noon. We went about 8pm and had a pretty good view of the ball dropping.

If you're going to try to book a hotel, I'd say do it as soon as possible. I've never been for New Years, but I'd imagine the hotels book up pretty early.

You better book right away.

I'd read a couple places to get there at like 4, good to know that going a little later won't mean that we miss out on seeing the ball.

I don't plan on doing this more than once really. I eventually plan on becoming a local so then I really won't be willing.

Exactly what I've been drilling into my friend's skulls lately. Once they solidify that they're going to go I'm just going to book it. All of the cheap hotels are already taken from what I've seen and I really don't want to have to stay all the way out in Newark...

On a side note, anyone have any pizza recommendations?

You can't swing a dead rat in NYC without hitting a pizza place. Try Ray's.

I gotta go with my all time favorite:
John's On Bleecker Street
Coal-Fired, Brick-Oven Pizza since 1929
278 Bleecker Street,
(between 6th and 7th Ave's)
New York, NY 10014

Has some bad reviews online, but I have never had a bad pie there.

They don't sell by the slice, but a small pie is not much. There are 3 major modelling agencies nearby so lots of worldwide eye candy on a weekday too.

You could try the La Quinta (or any hotel) in Queens|LaGuardia for a place to stay & take the 7 train into Grand Central & 42nd early & make a day of it.

Yeah...you definitely gotta get there early. I lived in NYC for 6 years, and never saw the ball drop. My last year there I figured I'd do it, so I hopped on a subway at 11pm from 116th to Time Square, and I couldn't see crap. Instead, I just watched the fireworks that were going off in Central Park.

Yeah, they are everywhere. I always used to eat at Famous Famiglia.

If you decide to go there:

From Grand Central jump on the Downtown 6 train which takes you to Bleecker.

Get off there & if 8 different guys approach you whispering " Do you want to buy some smoke?" at lightning speed. You are in the neighborhood. It is slightly west of the subway outlet.
