View Full Version : Dave's training
Big_D November 13th, 2007, 12:53 AM Well since I'm done with the Smolov I thought I'd start a new log. My current stats as of now are:
Bench: 305 paused, 330-340 touch and go.
Squat: 420-440
Dead:470(Should be going up soon)
I'm currently training the powerlifts, so that's what this log will be about.
Big_D November 13th, 2007, 12:59 AM November 12th, 2007
Bench: 3x5x275, 1x4x275, 1x13x185
Flies, military press, lateral raises, tricep pushovers(???)
Big_D November 13th, 2007, 03:25 PM I think I might go do deadlifts later, to give me a break from studying. Calculus exam tomorrow and then history on thursday, with no break in between to study. Tomorrow is going to be an all nighter.
Can you train one day, pull an all nighter, and train the next day?

Yeesh. Uh, I think sleep is more important after lifting than before. You might not want to lift if you know you'll be pulling an all nighter right after. Also, it might be harder for you to stay up after some heavy deadlifts. I know all I want to do after deads is sleep.
Good luck on those exams!

Thanks, I'm going to need it. I'm effing terrible at math. Good at science though . I'm sleeping tonight, so that's why I thought I'd get deads out of the way. I was thinking some back work and maybe power stuff weds and thurs(which is the period of no sleep). It's stupid I still even want to train with like the hour of free time I'll have, haha.

Thanks guys! I'm going to try to get some footage of my lifting this Thanksgiving break because I'll have access to a camera.
Big_D November 14th, 2007, 02:05 AM Journal-ish entry:
Without a sport to train for, I feel as if I'm going nowhere. Sure my lifts are going up, but lifting for the sake of lifting? Lifting has always been my strong point, but I've always used it as a tool to achieve my other goals(throwing, sprinting). I also miss the team mentality. Everyone supporting you and you supporting them, as well as depending on them and them you. It makes me try that much harder.
All I've been doing lately is studying. The Bio test was very hard, and I don't think anyone did very well. I have Calculus tomorrow, and I don't think that is going to go very well because related rates confuse the ever loving hell out of me. I get the concept, but every new problem takes me 50 minutes to figure out. After the test tomorrow it is straight to identifying terms, relating them to readings, and relating them to their signifigance with the American West. Boo. Tomorrow will definitely be an all nighter, so I'm really looking forward to that.
I don't know what I want to do. Integrative Physiology would be cool, but what would I do with it? Med school and do a sports doctor? Biology would also be decent. Math is out. I hate times of transition, I like constants in my life.
I think most of this angst is stemming from my dating life, or shall I say non-existant. I've had one date all semester, and it went pretty poorly. I don't understand why I'm so anxiety ridden when it comes to gurlzz.
<warning>This post comes off as REALLY emo, and I'm honestly not upset at all. It's just a summation of my current thoughts with reguards to my life.</warning>
1FastGTX November 14th, 2007, 02:15 AM Congrats on the awesome pull!!!

This seems like the obvious answer, but, what about joining a powerlifting team?

There was talk a bout Big_D competing in the state championships. That would be a good start. He's got decent numbers and they are going up fast.
It's a pity the fencing club didn't catch his imagination. Only someone who has actually fenced against someone that big and fast can appreciate just how scary that is. I had that experience once against a guy named Vargas fencing for City College. He changed everyone's undewear. It would play to his power as a sprinter too.
Given his strength as a thrower, and rapid improvement in the squat and deadlift, the real question is - what sport would he NOT be pretty good at?
And nothing wrong with studying hard. That's what will pay the bills for the rest of your life.
gazareth November 14th, 2007, 05:17 AM Join a rugby club. You're fast and strong, you'd make a good outside back or a back row forward.
cajunman November 14th, 2007, 12:03 PM :tucool: Nice pull, week ahead of schedule...
Team sports: rugby, most def. You have the mentality for it, and now is the best time.
Individual sports: PL, Highland Games (esp. with throwing background plus chicks love the kilt), Strongman (I think you'd do well if you stayed the weight you are, and even if you added 40+ pounds). Lots of camaraderie in all three sports.
Seltzer November 14th, 2007, 12:47 PM Congrats on hitting 500!

I checked around and we don't have anything like that at CU. Not even a weightlifting club :nono:.

Thanks zen. Yeah studying has always been my main priority. I got a 4.0 in high school, but calculus is going to de-rail my 4.0 in college before it even begins .

I thought about it. I still havn't completely decided yet. I could NOT tell my mom, because my face is worth about $900,000 with all the surgeries I've had on it for my cleft lip and palate. My nose is completely synthetic and she would flip a wig if she found out I was playing rugby, hahaha.

I'll look into strongman, it's always interested me. Is there any sprint factor to it? That would help, haha.
Congrats on hitting 500!

So play as a winger. Pretty much all you have to do is run fast, tackle guys doing the same, catch and occasionally kick.
If you're a good enough winger, you won't even get hit at all:

I'm playing wing this weekend :claphigh:
gazareth November 15th, 2007, 12:43 PM More great wingplay:
The guy scoring this one is an American  He totally skins Bryan Habana of South Africa, regarded by many people as the best winger in the world at the moment:

Here is Habana himself. Vrooooooooooooom:

England's Jason Robinson, nicknamed Billy Whizz. He's actually playing full-back in this game (number 15, whereas wingers are 14 and 11) but he has played for England at wing and full-back in equal measure. This is an outstanding display of counter-attacking, running the ball back from an opposition's defensive clearance kick, scything through the defence and timing his off-load in the tackle to absolute perfection.
One of my heroes :dreamy:

Here he is again playing for the British & Irish Lions on their '03 tour to Australia. This is how you sidestep a motherfucker:

Freshman year in high school, so four years. My first two years were mainly focused on getting a big bench, though. Haha.
Necross November 15th, 2007, 04:19 PM Ah, no wonder. I thought that you got to those numbers within a year
Big_D November 15th, 2007, 04:55 PM Nope, and supposedly male strength peaks at about 25, so I'm excited.
Big_D November 16th, 2007, 01:14 AM Hmm, did legs today.
10x225 squat
5x315
2x5x335(hip flexor was really bothering me, so I stopped)
leg press
10 plates: 1x9(left quad had a burning sensation and felt numb)
1x8-9(same thing)
1x2(happened again so I stopped)
Then I left because that was weird. I jogged home to try to get the blood flowing but my leg is still a bit numb. Weirdd.
Big_D November 16th, 2007, 10:08 PM Does anyone ever feel like they don't have enough time? Felt that way tonight.
November 16, 2007
Bench Press 3x5x100db alternated shoulderpress 3x6x60, bench 2x5x90db, shoulder 2x6x55
Tricep work, chest work.

Big_D November 17th, 2007, 09:04 PM Played some tackle football today, 4v4. A LOT of running and I'm out of shape. My track friend isn't and I had to cover him hahaha. The rest of my friends are small though so it was pretty easy to run over them. The squatting program has really helped my explosive running. I can stop and reaccelerate really quickly now, which helped a lot today. Rolled my ankle though, because I have a supination problem.
Robot out.
Big_D November 17th, 2007, 10:27 PM eating today has been gawdawful. 3 apples and a little candy the whole day. Going to make up for some calories right now. Mmm mm qdoba.
Big_D November 18th, 2007, 04:55 PM Wow I'm pretty sore today, my ankle is pretty tender and my shoulder feels a little out of whack. Regardless I'm going to go do my back workout here in a bit.
Big_D November 20th, 2007, 03:30 AM Monday November 19 2007
Back workout: Weighted pullups, +55 3x6,5,4
tripod rows, cable rows, machine rows
Today I tried to do a leg workout but I went for front squats, hip flexor was yelling, so I went to leg press, left leg went numb again, so I did 4x20x175 on leg extension, lol. It was a silly workout but it seemed pretty effective.

Well you do what you gotta do. 20x175# leg extensions is pretty noticable though. I'm liking the rows there. What about the hamstrings? Looks like you need some Krispy Kremes.

Big_D November 21st, 2007, 12:30 AM Bah, if you notice I'm only putting dates on the workouts I like, these other workouts don't count. Today I did deads: 225x5 315x5 405x3 465x0x2. Bar at the rec center down here has NO bite to it. It's like holding a plain slippery metal bar. I broke it off the floor and up to my hips, but by that time my grip was failing. FU shitty bars. Straps don't help me for some reason. I supersetted some rdls with calf raises and then did some leg curls. FU shitty bars.

Yeah a bad bar is a grip problem. Why not get a pair of power grabs just to immunize your workout from these disappointments?
By the way you can always take a page out of my insane traner Andre's book and do your calf raises on your maximum deadlift...
Yes, he really did that. Somehow he got his weight on his toes and instead of abandonning the attempt he just "went with it" and ended up locking out on his toes because his calves were firing all the way up.
Then, since he hadn't done legs before that workout for well over a month, he did heavy deadlifts for four more days following that. He told me on Monday that he feels great from it.

I'm so poor. I'll just have to do a bunch of grip work or something. Your trainer sounds super sweet.
Big_D November 29th, 2007, 02:26 AM I've been training, just not posting, DON'T WORRY EVERYONE. THIS THREAD IS SO CROWDED .
For some reason my legs are sore today after 3x8x300 on squats yesterday, not my best by a long shot, the fourth set started to aggravate my hip flexor so I bailed. I did 3x20 on leg extensions after that and some weird rock climbing pull up things.

For good health? Yup, I agree with Rise.
Lifting is a solitary sport. Sometimes we all don't have specific goals to shoot for in regards to achieving success in a sport or an activity like competitive powerlifting or bodybuilding. In the past, all my training was geared towards competitive bodybuilding. But what I noticed quite subtly, was that my success in the gym was transcending into other areas of my life. A very wide ranging arena, if you will. By continuously challenging yourself in the gym, breaking down barriers, attaining PR's, moving iron that 99% of the general public can't or won't do, you are accomplishing something that very few people have the capacity or mental fortitude for. You become a cut above, but in the same sense, the world around you opens up, confidence rises, humility and sensitivity begins to surface. You discover attributes about yourself that has been lying dormant.
Just be the best lifter you can be. There's no need to "train" for anything specifically. Lifting successfuly and consistantly will help you become a success in just about any other venture that life has to offer. :tu:

I've noticed that too, lifting improves everything else. It's kind of like my "escape" so-to-speak. I always work better when I have specific sports related goals, or someone to compete with, like a training partner. Thanks mastover, your posts are always helpful :D.
Workout today was decent, my bench press endurance is pathetic, like really, really pathetic. 3x10x185(56% of max?), last rep was BARELY, then 18x135 about a minute later. Then some bent over rows, 3x6x205(I am bad at these, I can't balance with them for some reason?) Then some shoulder press w/ DBS 4x6x50lbs, then pull ups 3x10, then tri extensions overhead 3x8x170, then 2x8x30 on hammer curls. My shoulder endurance is terrible, and the strength is also terrible. I'm going to need to look into fixing that real soon, because my overhead strength is really bad right now. The torso can support it, but the arms can't get it up there.
Big_D December 1st, 2007, 02:00 AM I went back and looked at my old journals, and there are a bunch of plusses and minuses. I found an old pic of when I was 205, and I'm so much bigger and leaner it is sweet, and my legs are much larger as well. The minuses are that I'm really missing hard cardio workouts. I think I'm going to talk to my old track coach see if he can design a workout program for me. My track friend says I coulda made the team easy, maybe I should have tried out:doh:. That whole prom situation makes me laugh now, and makes me :o.
edit: My traps are also a lot bigger now, which is good because big traps look cool.
Big_D December 3rd, 2007, 10:47 PM Running inside sux. I'm also way out of shape, workout today looked something like this
4x200m@~30s pace, 4x60m starts, 1x40x135 back squat, then some bulgarians. I'm pretty toast, fuck sprinting when you haven't done it in awhile.
Big_D December 4th, 2007, 04:05 PM I might not train today I havn't decided. I have such an obscene amount of work that I don't know if I will have time. If I do I'll probably do some heavy singles for DL or some rack pulls.

And yet I continue to do it...
Today I went and did some liss, walking uphill for about 30 mins at 4.0 7.5incline and then did 3 miles in around 25 minutes.
edit: For some reason I can't really feel these 20 extra lbs I've been carrying around since track... Maybe it's the stronger legs.

25-50 x 200m on 30 second pace with 90 seconds rest

Haha cross country speeds are insane. We did one workout that was 12x800m@3:00min or under.
The hardest workout I ever did was during track, and it was also 200ms, surprise surprise. 6x200m 25, 25, 26, 25, 24, 26(hardest thing i've ever done). I literally puked and then had to lie down for about an hour because I was tired/dizzy. Second hardest was 10x100m hill sprints as fast as you could go. Cardio workouts can get really insane really fast.

This 400 m forest loop we had was probably the worst for me. I was a pretty bad runner so the coach would make me sit out one for every two I completed. I believe we used to do about 6-8 of them in the workout.
I liked 200's and hill sprints because, even if they were brutal and there was a lot of them, the actual sprints were pretty short in duration -- it was when they got longer that I really had problems. Of course, the one season that I did track I did long distance since it didn't feel right being under another coach (he did XC and LD). :bang:

Yeah xc workouts are really meant to weed out the normal people from the genetic freaks, that's what I decided during xc.
Did you ever race a 400m? It is sooooooooooooooooooo bad. I did one once and had to cancel my discus and shot throws because my calves were cramping so bad.
edit: Damn your edits! I'm the same way though, I do much better with shorter races. The 100m woulda been my best race but my start was never fully fleshed out in the 1 season I sprinted.

zenpharaohs December 5th, 2007, 02:23 AM Yeah xc workouts are really meant to weed out the normal people from the genetic freaks, that's what I decided during xc.
You guys can laugh, but freshman year in High School I ran cross country. I did suck at it. It was brutal. Then I made varsity tennis in my freshman year and blew off cross country.
When I got to college and did fencing, the conditioning running was much more than we had done in cross country. I did not realize until years later that this was unusual for fencers. But our strength and conditioning coach (who was also the epee coach) had been on the U. S. Army and Olympic pentathlon teams. During the Vietnam war, to be on the Army pentathlon team, you had to be on the Olympic team, or else they really needed you to take this rifle to Vietnam, OK? So they would roust these "malingerers" at fuck-all in the morning and run them for 3000m over Texas back country for time. Then more running just before lunch in the Texas heat. Every day. I think it permanently warped that guy's mind into a permanent runner's high. So what he made us do for running was a bit high on the mileage. Oddly enough he would start running about five minutes into our run on this old school curve banked wooden 1/12th mile indoor track and if he lapped you before you got your two miles in, you had to add a lap. You could die from that because he wasn't going to slow down.
Now I almost don't understand how I handled that. All the other stuff, sure, no problem I could do it today. But now that I think of it? It feels like someone else did the running. The only memory I have is hearing his footsteps on my ass and having to dig in to avoid getting lapped by that freaking demonic energizer bunny.
Goes without saying he was the best coach I ever had but I didn't realize it until much much later.
zenpharaohs December 5th, 2007, 02:27 AM Did you ever race a 400m?
Race? No. But I did run 440 yards some times. It wasn't so bad. I could consistently run in the low 70s.
EDIT: OK occasionally the low 70s.
EDIT: OK 72 seconds was a personal best. But it left room for me to do better thirty years later...
Big_D December 5th, 2007, 02:34 AM Race? No. But I did run 440 yards some times. It wasn't so bad. I could consistently run in the low 70s.
Quit being a silly bear. 400m is the worst race in history. My PR was like a 53.something, and it was absolutelyfuckingterrible. Our sprints coach was a masochist and did our workouts with us, and for one workout we had 4x400ms @65-67 pace. :blank:

Varsity eh. Nice.(xc is for wimps)
I was the worst xc runner ever, I think my pr during the season was like a 24:19 because I was 220 lbs when I was doing it and hadn't ever done serious cardio. After wrestling my 5k times got down really low though, it was surprising.

I think you told me about that guy before, he sounds super cool. I love crazy ass running coaches. Our coach was a professional triathlete and his wife was an olympic long distance runner, and they're both wacked out. Best coaches ever, but super crazy. Our team was 2nd in the nation this year for XC, and we had like 5 kids running sub 16, and they aren't seniors.
The best running coaches have strategies which make it so you either have to do it or it's just fun to do it.

A: I meant it. 72 seconds was my PR in the 440. We didn't have these "meters" you speak of. You pussies quit nearly seven yards before the finish. I fart in your general direction.
B: You could not have been the worst XC runner ever. I set my personal best mile time of 6:20 about a year ago. It only took thirty five years to get that time down.
C: He was out there, but he was not a running coach. He was technically the epee coach, who also did conditioning. Lots of conditioning. Oddly enough our head coach was a fine fencer, but he was 77 years old and under five feet tall so he wasn't doing the running. He did the drinking. EDIT: I helped with that part - he and I were the only Manhattan drinkers on the team, and he liked to get them by the pitcher.

Workout today was pretty fun, saw a girl I went to high school with on the track.
4x200m@30(inside this is fucking brutal, tight turns rape your legs really fast)
4xstarts
Bench 1x5x135 1x5x225 2x5x275 1x7x225
1 arm overhead tri extensions: 70 lbs, 3x5
forearm curl thingies, then I peaced out. Wayy underfed today, maybe 1500 cals and they all came at lunch.

What the hell are you doing there, noob?
Big_D December 6th, 2007, 02:33 AM What the hell are you doing there, noob?
Studying and forgetting to eat :o. I weighed in at 197# with my chucks on, and those are like 30 lb shoes. Ok not really but they're like 2 pounds.

Well eat, dumbass. You need it even more for the studying than the running. (Dunno if you know this but the brain sucks glucose at a whole other level than your muscles even know about. And after that it's the kidneys. Muscles come pretty far down the energy list; we only think of them because they are under our voluntary control.)
carguy December 8th, 2007, 10:59 PM Happy Birthday, Dave. Looks like you did the smart thing and didn't spend it posting here. Nineteen is a good time. Enjoy!:tucool:
Pete5 December 8th, 2007, 11:41 PM Dave, I think you need to take up this guy's diet.

Happy Birthday also.
zenpharaohs December 9th, 2007, 12:46 AM Happy Birthday!

Now that is what I call a hilarious typo :tucool:
Also, Happy Birthday Dave
Remember, where I currently live, booze has an age limit of 16
'Chef
Big_D December 10th, 2007, 07:09 PM Thanks guys. I had a lot of sushi for my birthday, yet I'm still 196#. I went to do some deadlifts today, but the lack of legwork these past two weeks has been rearing it's ugly head, and I missed on 480 3 times, because my lockout wasn't going to happen. Usually my hips are my strongest point. I'll probably be doing the first part of the smolov again over break, because I really liked that program.
Big_D December 18th, 2007, 04:56 AM Havn't been updating this
4x9x285 squats and some burnout calves.
Big_D December 23rd, 2007, 04:40 AM Been busy, finals went alright. I'm home for about 3 weeks, workouts have gone like this:
Weds 5x7x305 squats
Fri 7x5x325 squats
Today 10x3x345 squats
Mentally these have been tough, weird. Tomorrow I'm doing cardio and maybe some upper stuff. It's so nice to see all my friends again.
Big_D December 27th, 2007, 03:18 AM Weight is 193# today, only I could lose weight over the holidays. :blank:
Squats monday were 4x9x305 and today was 5x7x325, I only made it through four sets and one rep, though.
carguy December 27th, 2007, 08:03 AM Weight is 193# today, only I could lose weight over the holidays. :blank:
I gained 5 over the holidays (which aren't over yet either). I'm only about 5 pounds behind you.
Big_D December 27th, 2007, 03:59 PM I gained 5 over the holidays (which aren't over yet either). I'm only about 5 pounds behind you.
2 Pounds now apparently, 190 when i woke up
Maya December 27th, 2007, 11:02 PM Weight is 193# today, only I could lose weight over the holidays. :blank:
We hate you
Nah... I did good too. Didn't gain any weight.
Big_D December 29th, 2007, 07:03 PM I'm SHRINKING :blank:. 189 today. I havn't been eating big or lifting big, going to lift right now then go to qdoba or something. Damnit that's one of my problems, I'm all or nothing sometimes.
Big_D December 30th, 2007, 05:33 AM I'm looking at my journal and the add at the bottom is about some refreshingly gay fitness site, sweet.
Did some bench today, my bench endurance is rock bottom these days, max is still 330ish but I can hammer 12 out with 225 and then I'm fried, can barely get 3 on the next set. Did bench, dips, wide grip pull ups, 1 arm db rows, and wrist curls.
Seltzer December 31st, 2007, 04:26 PM Dave, best wishes for a happy and healthy new year!
Maya December 31st, 2007, 10:47 PM Hey Dave!! Happy New Year :D
jchantelau January 2nd, 2008, 10:07 PM Happy New Year Dave!
Big_D January 5th, 2008, 03:37 PM Happy New Years to you guys as well.
My new scale keeps telling me I'm losing weight :blank:. 187. I am not eating enough but I'm not that hungry, so I had 4 whole eggs a banana and 2 bowls of cereal, going to try to at least maintain for another week until I get back up to college. I've been skiing and lifting, and I think the skiing might be contributing to weight loss, we were up on the mountain the other day and it was -20 degrees at the top not including the 40mph winds. My hip flexor is still acting up a little so I'm going to have to look for ways to remedy that.
carguy January 5th, 2008, 05:02 PM My new scale keeps telling me I'm losing weight :blank:. 187.
Start chowing down, man. How can I call you fat if I weigh more than you? (I don't, but I'm awful close).

Well you're just as fat, fatso.
_______________________________
I've just been hanging out with my homies, getting ready to head back up to school. I went skiing again, been working out, have some pretty severe leg DOMS, etc etc I'm sure my life is as boring to you as it is to me. I think I might take up BJJ or something when I get back up to school, never know. This paragraph isn't supposed to be formatted well so don't yell at me, I'm just rambling. I havn't been posting because I figured I'd rather not get lost in the flood of New Year's posts. The gym is more crowded than ever and I hate it so. Everything was taken yesterday so I grabbed a 60lb dumbell and played with it for awhile in a corner.
I've also been thinking as to why some people fail after New Year's and I've never had a problem. I think it's because I honestly love exercise, especially weight training, and it allows me to take out my frustrations and angers and rewards me tangibly for my efforts. I don't lift for health, like some. I don't lift for aesthetics, although that is a big plus. I lift to get stronger and to become the best, most capable person I can become.
On another note, I've never been particularly money driven either. Salaries have never really impressed me and neither have titles, like Vice President of Customer Relations and the such. On my priority list, these things are second to lifting, because I believe one must find joy in the thing that they love, and I'm glad that for me, that thing is lifting.
If you've made it here, you probably read to much, and for that I'm sorry.
Ta ta, for now.
zenpharaohs January 24th, 2008, 01:21 PM If you've made it here, you probably read to much, and for that I'm sorry.
I'm sure you are sorry. How about filling in the parts about the training....your journal says it has training in it....

I've been training I promise, just not xferring it from my workout log into here =(. I've been meaning to start a new journal anyways, I don't like the atmosphere this one gives off.
