This happened a while back. I was at the DMV and was tired of just sitting there so I decided I would stand for a bit. To not be in the way, I stood way in the back with my back to a blank wall. It right away caused concern with the employees and I was informed by security that I could not stand while waiting.

I was no where near the counters or tests areas or anything for that matter. At first I said ok, then I stopped myself and asked the guy " you mean to tell me I can't stand while waiting for my number to be called, that's DMV policy"? He said yes, it is policy. The nearset counter or writing surface for that matter was at least 30-40 feet a way. The place is set up like a theater with the counters all in a row then a huge area with about 200 seats set up facing the counters. Its not the old school wrap around type DMV. I was behind all the chairs at about the farthest point from the counters.

I have never been able to figure it out. I could understand if they thought I could cheat the test takers or impede the lines or something but come on. No standing?

They have that policy for a very simple reason. If you are allowed to stand while waiting at the DMV, then it is possible that you might experience slightly less misery...which kinda defeats the entire Mission of the DMV.

Next time, they'll probably take out all the seats and force everyone to stand (and prohibit sitting). I like DMV's who try new and fresh approaches to keeping everyone as miserable as possible.
