Similar Thread (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=29984) that might help.

Creatine is an any time supplement IMO. Just don't waste money on anything above creatine monohydrate (micronized like creapure). Don't worry about the ones filled with sugar that cost a lot more.

I hate shopping at Wal-Mart. But I do get some stuff there because it's so cheap compared to Wegmans. One thing I don't buy at Wal-Mart is fresh meat. YMMV but I bought steaks at Wal-Mart that tasted like pork. They don't put USDA ratings on the meat for a reason (I'll give you a clue- it's not USDA Choice!)

Here's some healthy things you can get at Wal-Mart on the cheap...

Frozen Chicken Breast, it's like $7 a bag if I remember correctly
Canned kidney/black/pinto/etc beans in the Goya section
Whey Protein in the Pharmacy section (body fortress brand)
Eggs / Egg Beaters
Bottled Water (the nestle 24 pack is always on sale for $3.80ish)
Veggies
Frozen Shrimp
Cottage Cheese
Canned Tuna

That's about all I can think of off the top of my head. Wal-Mart doesn't have too much in the way of healthy stuff, you have to get pretty creative. IMO they cater to the "obese america".

P.S Depending on how clean you are looking to eat, here are somethings I'd drop from your list:

Chicken Wings (replace w/ chicken breast)
Cheese Sticks (replace w/ cottage cheese)
Light Mayo (replace w/ hummus or veggies if you don't like eating dry sandwhiches)
Bologna (replace w/ turkey breast)
Red Diamond Tea (probably loaded with HFCS, replace either water, unsweetened iced tea, etc)
Gushers
Honey Wheat Bread (try and get whole grain otherwise this is ok)

Just a tip: Prime is the fattiest beef, followed by choice and then select.

You pretty much can't find prime in most stores, but just because something isn't "choice" doesn't necessarily mean it's lower quality, just that it has less fat content.

You are correct, it has a lower fat content. This changes the flavor. If you do a search on google you'll also find that they inject the meat with a 12-15% solution of water and salt. They also add red dye to make the meat look fresher than it is. The wal-mart brand meat is "ungraded" or USDA Standard/Commercial. Like I said, YMMV but the meat I've bought at Wal-Mart has tasted like crap.

Here in Las Vegas I love our Wal-Mart grocery store. I am not sure they are the same all over the country. But ours are great.

I love Whole foods market too, but our Walmart has alot of good stuff (& some of this stuff you did mention):

Pluots
Vegetarian Soy Meats
Omega 3 Peanut Butter
Cheap delicious cottage cheese
Big Fat Strawberries
Blueberries
Contessa Shrimp Stir fry ($1.50 Cheaper than anywhere else nearby)
Cut up cantaloupe
Body Fortress Whey Protein (Cheap & Delicious getting very good results too.)
EAS Bars (1.57 per)
Big bags of frozen shrimp & calamari

I was really surprised when I walked in there for the first time.
They also had like the best selection of name brand flat panel big screen TVs for really good prices.

I have been impressed. It's too bad they killed off the little guy store
on their way to world domination though.

EDIT: I forgot to add they sold Glutamine powder there as well.

I'm pretty sure that dying meat red is illegal in the US. It's actually packaged in a partially carbon monoxide atmosphere, which causes myoglobin in the meat to take on a bright red color. The FDA terms it a "color fixative".

I'm not so sure about the water and salt, either. When pork and chicken are brined, they are required to be marked differently. ("Water added", "Pork and water product", etc.) I don't think brining of red meat is really a common practice anyway, but I would assume that it would have to be marked differently as well.

It's hard to make useful suggestions when we don't really know what you're eating when, and in what combinations.

Have you read the weightloss stickies? Or is that not your goal? I would not be spending money on creatine at the moment, until you have your goals and methodology sorted out.

More info, more help! :gl:

Yeah, the individually frozen chicken breast that Sam's sells (Tyson brand) are brined. I've neve seen it with beef, but if it was done it would have to have "salt" on the ingredient list.

Oh man! Do I agree with this! DO NOT buy fresh meat at Wal-Mart! It's a few cents cheaper, but the couple of packages I've bought were terrible. Very, very tough steaks and pork that tasted weird.

All true for the above items, and I'll throw in some more:

Dried Beans (2lb bag of pinto is like .99)
Rice
Oatmeal
Frozen Veggies (the California blend is insanely cheap...$5 for a huge bag with 12+ servings)
Ground Turkey (only thing in the fresh meat section I buy...blue label)
Preformed Turkey Patties (frozen, Jennie-O brand)
Frozen Cod, Tilapia
100% Orange Juice
Yogurt
Whole Wheat Tortillas
Whole Wheat Bread
Fat Free Milk

I'd say 80% of my groceries come from Wal-Mart. The other 20% is fresh meat and a few other small items from Safeway or the like.

It'd be better to eat plain oats, but if eating the variety pack means it satisfies your sweet tooth and you don't binge on doughnuts, then yeah, it's ok.

what kinda steak should i get? London Broil is my favorite.

My uncle bought some beef patties, are those healthy? Why don't you read the label and decide for yourself? Sorry if that sounds rude, but there are dozens of different kinds of beef patties. Some are 73% lean, others are 96% lean. There is no way to know without having more information. Just guessing? Probably not very healthy unless it's sirloin patties or 96% lean.

and is the strawberry/banana orange juice healthy? healthier than drinking a 2 liter bottle of orange crush? yes. healthier than drinking 100% OJ? No.

and about teh whey protein, I can drink that stuff and still lose weight?????You lose weight when calories in are less than calories out. If you need X amount of calories per day with all of your activity to maintain weight and you daily eat 300 calories less than what you need to maintain , you'll slowly lose weight. You can lose weight eating nothing but Twinkies as long as calories in are less than calories out. (That was an example, not a suggestion!)

More questions:

Generally these are full of sugar and other crap and use instant oats that turn out all mushy. I'd recommend buying rolled oats (also known as "Old Fashioned"). The texture is much better, and you can flavor them up with real fruit, splenda, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, etc.

what kinda steak should i get?

Leaner cuts generally end in "loin" or "round" for start.

My uncle bought some beef patties, are those healthy?

Could be, maybe not. Patting out patties yourself is pretty easy, though, and doesn't cost extra or have any ingredients you aren't familiar with.

and is the strawberry/banana orange juice healthy?

Most are full of added sugars or high fructose corn syrup. Probably better off eating strawberries or bananas. Fruit juice in general is overrated IMO. Eat the fruit and get the added fiber and satiety. (This from a guy who used to drink 2 gallons of OJ a week).

and about teh whey protein, I can drink that stuff and still lose weight?????

Sure. It's just basically a convenience food. It's not something magical that will immediately add 10 lbs to you or something. If only...

But I think you need to think about "losing weight" a bit. If that's your only goal, you might be able to do it and not like the results. Most truly want "fat loss", not "weight loss". You can lose weight and just look like a smaller fat person with a crashed metabolism, or you can resistance train and eat sensibly and end up lean and looking much better and be able to maintain the fat loss much easier once you return to "normal" levels of calories.

Pilgrim's Pride chicken breast tenderloins. They have way less fat in them than the Wal Mart brands. Also, make sure it's the tenderloins. I think those are the healthiest chicken I've found.

Again, I get the impression that you would benefit immensely from reading some of the stickies in the newbies and fat loss forums.

I don't want to keep arguing about this but I took a look at the meat at wal-mart today. They have a new brand which is called "Steakhouse" brand. It's significantly more expensive and is only USDA-Choice. It doesn't look like it has the red color treatment done to it though.

Anyways, if you inspect the label of any of the beef they sell, it says "may contain up to a 10% solution of water". It's not labeled any differently besides the little small print. Wal-Mart beef sucks.:eat:
