View Full Version : Site's going really slow for me
SLUDGE April 26th, 2004, 02:41 AM Seems to hitch on every page access. Strangely enough, www.johnstonefitness.com is doing okay. Are we linking some content from another site?

John Stone April 26th, 2004, 07:36 AM It looks like Savvis may have been having some issues last night but everything seems ok now. Very fast on this end.

Not on my end, John. It can take a minute to get a page change. I am on DSL and ALL other sites I have checked to day, fly except the forums. That incluses your main page. I saw it late last night and it has stayed extremely slow all day!

John Stone April 27th, 2004, 09:01 AM I got your traceroute and it's actually very fast: 44 ms is the worst RTT. The original traceroute in this thread was showing a problem, but that was cleared up and I have not seen it since.
I block all ICMP traffic past 208.173.16.202, so the timeouts you are seeing past that point are normal.
The server load has been rather low, too.
Maybe try clearing your cache? I just don't see any problems here + it's very fast for me (I'm coming from a remote network, too).

Thanks I cleared cache and restarted computer and I am back up to speed. I should have tried that first thing. Thanks for answer and good luck on operations and a quick recovery.

ABguy April 30th, 2004, 09:46 PM I can't get the forum page to load (sometimes they load, but VERY slow)from work, but as soon as I get home....BAM I'm on.
I'm gonna have to find another job if I can't tune in during the day..lol
My workplace isn't sophisticated enough to be blocking access, what's the deal with the cache clearing......maybe I need to clean out some temp files ?? not sure how to do it.
The main site loads fine...it's the forum that is a problem. Been going on for 4-5 days.....I'm having withdrawals.
Guidance anyone ?
SLUDGE May 1st, 2004, 10:59 PM Yup, the site sucks from my computer at work still (since my original post) , but it's okay from home. I actually took the liberty of setting up an http proxy on my Linux server at home so I could still access the site at work. :)
Still, if one person is complaining, it's probably affecting quite a few.
I will give two traceroutes to help out with the problem, the first is from work (slow) and the other is from home (fast). My work connect is through Shaw Business, and my home connect is through Shaw at home. Both cable providers.

I suppose I could tell you more if you allowed ICMP past atlanta. If you are willing to do so John, I can give you a shell to test on so you can quickly open and close the ICMP window.
Best wishes on your recovery, btw.
John Stone May 1st, 2004, 11:16 PM My server is the next hop and is what's blocking the ICMP traffic. Because the problem is happening at your work and not at your home, then it must be happening somewhere on the Internet (or on your network at work) that is not within my control. I monitor the site from 2 different locations on the net and there have been no connectitivity issues.

turing May 5th, 2004, 06:57 AM There definately seems to be something strange going on. The forums have been *extremely* slow for me starting yesterday and continuing through today. I am on Shaw Cable as well, and see a traceroute very similar to what has been posted. However, since the main site (and all other sites) appears to be functioning perfectly fine, I'm led to believe that the problem does lie somehow in the forums setup. This problem exists on both a "clean" browser, as well as two of my computers here, so I don't see how my configuration could be causing any problems.
I'm posting this from lynx -- the light markup fed to this text browser makes the site usable. This is the second time composing this post though, so hopefully I've got lynx figured out now. Anyways, I'll check back again tomorrow -- certainly do hope that the issue (whatever it is!) can get resolved!
John Stone May 5th, 2004, 08:23 AM The site is responding lightening quick for me and several other people I've asked about it. Also, out of almost 3,000 members, I've only had a handful of complaints--those found in this thread. Some have not reported back and I can only assume that the problem was on their end because they are still coming to the forum, and some have found the problem to be on their end and posted here.
The traceroutes above are fast (except for the first one, but that was an isolated incident). The timeouts are normal because I block ICMP traffic.
I'm not sure what to tell you. If there was a system-wide problem surely there would be dozens, if not hundreds of complaints every day.
I'll run some tests, but I track the performance of the server very closely. The server has not been under any serious loads and everything is functioning fine under the hood. I'm all for responding to problems, but I just don't think the problem is on this end.

Craig May 5th, 2004, 08:52 AM I'm on this forum most of the day every day and, so far, I've never had any problems.
Tempered May 5th, 2004, 08:01 PM I have had problems from work for the last week or so as well. The main site is fine, the forums are really slow for some reason.
It is a bellsouth DSL connection and is completely separate from our network (I use it to test web pages externally).
I have no problems at all from home on comcast cable.
turing May 6th, 2004, 02:21 AM I'm glad to see that I'm not the only with access problems. (And there could be more - I can't even get on to post this from my regular browser). But it does seem strange -- if most people don't have any problems and the server's operating properly... And if every other site (including JSF main pages) work properly, what could possibly be the problem? Are the forums on a different network/server than the main site?
Very strange.
John Stone May 6th, 2004, 08:08 AM All 3 of my sites are served from the same dedicated server.
I would expect a handful of people out of a community of almost 3,000 to have problems. There are many things that could be causing your slowdowns and, as I mentioned above, 2 or 3 people out of 3,000 is hardly indicative of a system-wide problem.
Still, I have run extensive automated tests for the past 24 hours on the database backend, the web server and the network connection and I'm convinced that the entire system is running with no issues. I'm sorry you are having problems, but I can't fix something on the server that isn't broken.
Have you tried clearing your cache? Logging out and logging back in? Checking for viruses/worms/spyware?
I'm convinced that there's nothing wrong on this end.

Tempered May 6th, 2004, 10:59 AM Okay, I think my problem is solved. I am not sure which one of these fixed it but I would think the cookies were the culprit.
I cleared my browser cache.
I logged out and deleted all my cookies for the site and rebooted.
Ran spybot, removed a few of the stupid tracking cookies you get everywhere.
Ran Norton Anti-Virus, no infections.
Went to the site and browsed a few public forums while not logged in. Everything seemed fine so I logged in and everything is back to normal.
I would try logging out and deleting the johnstonefitness.com cookies first. I really think that is what solved the problem.
Thanks for the help John.
turing May 7th, 2004, 05:24 PM I'm glad to see that I'm not the only with access problems.
That was an extremely poor choice of words -- I'm certainly not wishing problems on anyone else!
Well, the site's back for me now. My cable modem stopped working yesterday afternoon -- after calling support, they determined that my signal levels were too low. The technician just left, I tried the site, and it's working again.
I'm not really sure why this was the only site affected. Perhaps the total number of http requests (42) involved in fetching a page contributed to the difficulties, but it still seems odd.
Sorry to trouble you John -- thanks for your help, and it's good to be back!
Toolish May 8th, 2004, 10:18 AM for the last week i have had a heap of trouble accessing forums...buit then today visit again and it is all good...not sure what changed
