View Full Version : Pumpkin Pie Protein Shake
phillydude October 25th, 2007, 12:29 PM We make a "Shake of the Month" here at the gym where I work. I usually end up modifying the "suggested" recipes to make them a little healthier for my own personal consumption, as the company who supplies our shake ingredients uses a lot of powdered flavorings which are some combination of sugar and non-dairy creamer (read: palm oil).
Anyway, the Shake of the Month for November is "Pumpkin Pie." And in looking at the canned pumpkin label, it seems that pumpkin is nutritionally very sound (provided you get 100% pumpkin and not "pumpkin pie mix" which has added sugar and stuff).
So anyway, here's what I came up with...
8oz skim milk
1/2 cup pumpkin
1/3 cup uncooked oats
2 scoops vanilla protein
cinammon / nutmeg to taste
Add ice and blend until smooth.
375 calories, 49g carb, 38g protein, 3g fat
MannishBoy October 25th, 2007, 01:59 PM I make this all the time. :eat: Pumpkin is extremely good for you. Lots of fiber, lots of beta-carotine.

You can also make a "pudding" consistency that's a good sub for pumpkin pie :)
NYTrooper October 29th, 2007, 01:56 AM This sounded really good so I tried to make some today. I used chocolate protein- I learned that the chocolate overpowers the pumpkin taste unless you put ALOT of pumpkin. I had to eat my protein shake with a spoon :P It should be better with Vanilla so I'll get some of that when I use up the rest of my chocolate.
I also made some healthy pumpkin pie today. I'll post the recipe but basically I used half the sugar, fat-free evaporated milk, and no pie crust. I really only like the pumpkin stuff and not the crust so no biggie for me. The pie crust itself has like the same amount of calories as the entire pie.
MannishBoy October 29th, 2007, 09:42 AM Here (http://forums.johnstonefitness.com/showthread.php?t=28859) is my pumpkin thread from way back.
SanFran_E October 29th, 2007, 07:28 PM You know, it may sound kind of nuts, but if you sub 12oz unsweetened green tea (Trader Joe's sells a good one, pre-made & cheap), it goes pretty well with this recipe.
Although it drops the protein a bit, it also drops the calories. Plus you get the kick-in-the-pants green tea bonus.
One other mod would be to add ground flax meal-- it's nutty and will boost the healthy fat profile.

NYTrooper November 4th, 2007, 08:10 PM Just did a quick search on amazon for you-
http://www.amazon.com/Farmers-Market-Foods-Organic-15-Ounce/dp/B000HDI5O8/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-4938842-2391240?ie=UTF8&s=grocery&qid=1194221393&sr=8-1
Kind of pricey.
Nox January 18th, 2008, 05:31 PM I have tried this and have been drinking these protein shakes for the past week.
All I have to say is that this is absolutely DELICIOUS. Terrifically satisfying, and easy to personalize.
I like to use organic pumpkin, a tablespoon of honey, plain cultured yogurt, pumpkin pie spice (cinnamon, clove, ginger, nutmeg), two scoops of protein powder and blend. Perfection.
It's perfect for me because I don't like consuming cold things, or ice in my drink, and it's not too sweet, but it still hits the spot. I attribute the recipe to my decreased consumption of other sweets and junk food, and it has helped to clean up my diet tremendously.
