I was doing cable crossover at the gym today, next to a couple people doing dumbell bench presses. A few feet past that was a line of hammer strength iso-lateral machines; the incline press one had a guy repping with 180# on each hand. Behind that were the barbell bench press stations. A couple feet away was the dip station.

So this new guy wearing perhaps the most conspicuous lifting belt I've ever seen comes over to my trainer Kenny and says "do you have a Smith machine?" Kenny says no. The guy says he would really like to use a Smith machine. Kenny says "we don't have one". I assumed the guy wanted to squat, so I asked what he wanted to do with the Smith. He said "I want to do something to work my chest." Kenny mentioned that the gym might be getting a Smith machine soon. I rolled my eyes - I knew this meant no squat rack again. The guy replies: "well I won't be back here again...."

Sounds like a plan, I thought to myself.

Kenny says: "Ok, well since you REALLY want to use one, I'll break out my magic lamp and make one appear."

I think he was just asking twice to emphasize how deficient everyone else was, compared to him, that we could possibly work out without a Smith machine. Cool, huh?
