View Full Version : Another pull-ups question
Rise October 11th, 2007, 03:30 PM Alright, so here's another pullup question: i can do a decent amount of pullups already and i don't particularly care to be able to do more. So I'm wondering if its worth doing weighted pullups now instead of just increasing my max # of them. After a full workout of shoulders, bi's, and weighted dips, i can do about 20 (+/- 1) in a row. my workout plan posted by mastover suggested adding weight when you get to 30, but i can't help but wonder if adding some weight before then can speed up my progress in that dept, especially since i'm currently bulking. any thoughts on this?
Also, i want to learn how to do a pull up -> body press (i don't remember what they are called). i think i'm strong enough to do them now, but i remember hearing there is some technique required to do them with rolling your shoulders somehow. if someone could mention the exercise name, i could look it up on youtube i'm sure...
Thanks!

I'd start doing weighted pullups when you can do more than 8 without weight. I don't see why it should be different from any other muscle group.
I went through a phase of doing 3 sets of 5 reps with a dumbell in between my feet, failing on the last set. Did wonders for the strength of my unweighted pullups.

Are you currently on the 20 rep squat program? If you are, I would finish the 6-8 weeks, and try to remain within the guidelines of the program. Try and increase your chinup reps every time out. Once you are ready for another program, you can then add weight to your chinups and change things up with your set/rep schemes. Aim for 30 reps on this routine. Hope things are going good for you. :tucool:

I believe you're thinking of a "muscle up" or "power straight." I wrote a pretty in depth post about the technique a while back in response to a question by mattback, I believe. It's all about setting a false grip before you start, though you should be able to generate more than enough force to do it without one if you can do 20 pull-ups consecutively.

yes, i'm doing that program still, and it is going great for me (thanks btw). i've gotten very strong from it and gained some good lean body mass. i think im going to straight up repeat the program for another 8 weeks or so - until january probably - i like it that much
that said, i'll just keep going for 30 until i'm done with the program, o wise one

that's it! yeah those are what i want to try, but i'm not sure where i can actually do them. i think i'd hit my head in my gym... but i'll find a place and work on them. thanks!

i'll probably try this after i finish my stint w/ mastover's plan... after we finish the bulk too :eat:
HevyMetal October 12th, 2007, 02:21 PM Rise...I notice you said you do your pullups after you've already worked
shoulders and bi's +Dips.
Try doing the pullups first, weighted, when your bi's are fresh.:)

He's doing a mastover plan. I'd let it go until he gets done with that.
